Top 25 Pitchers in Rangers history

Here's something to have fun with in the middle of the winter...

1. Charlie Hough - For five years (1984-88) he was about all the Rangers had.
2. Nolan Ryan - This is a tough call, putting him ahead of No. 3
helling2.jpg3. Ferguson Jenkins - His 1974 season remains the best ever by a Rangers pitcher.
4. John Wetteland - The best reliever in Rangers history.
5. Rick Helling - He may be the most underrated player in Rangers history but that's another list.
6. Kenny Rogers - He had some excellent seasons but he missed the playoff years.
7. Aaron Sele - He was terrific in 1998-99.
8. Bobby Witt - No Rangers pitcher ever had to deal with higher expectations.
9. Kevin Brown - He was good. He could have been better. Especially in 1991.
10. Jeff Russell - An All-Star as a starter and closer. He was also setup on the first division winner.
11. Jeff Zimmerman - Still remember John Blake saying in Spring Training 2002, "Zimmerman has a twinge in his elbow and is day-to-day."
12. Bert Blyleven - Might be a little too high but that 1977 staff was really good.
13. Jose Guzman - Solid. That's all you can say.
14. Francisco Cordero - He deserves to be remembered better than is actually the case.
15. Gaylord Perry - Trading him for Dave Tomlin may have cost the Rangers a division title in 1978. What were they thinking?
16. Vicente Padilla - He has pitched better here than people give him credit for Millwood.jpg.
17. Danny Darwin - Possibly the most versatile pitcher in Rangers history.
18. John Burkett - Probably rated too high but the Rangers don't win in 1996 without him.
19. Doc Medich - He had four straight winning seasons with the Rangers.
20. Kevin Millwood - Obviously the Rangers expect more. So does he.
21. Rick Honeycutt - The only Rangers pitcher to ever win an ERA title.
22. Jim Kern - 1979. Wow.
23. Dave Schmidt - Very underrated. He was pretty solid in relief in the early '80s.
24. Ken Hill - One good year in Texas - 1996 - but it was a big one.
25. Jon Matlack - The Rangers had a lot of "name" pitchers in 1974-85 who had like just one or two good years.

Wow! That is quite an impressive list.

TR you are nuts and must own stock in the Bobby Witt Fan club. WITT won 17 games one year and never fulfilled his potential. What a waste. Nice guy but he didn't fulfill his potential period end of story #25 in my book they didn't call him "chunk" for no reason. Since we brought him back here what 3 times, maybe he should be hired as pitching coach. Oh wait that 17 million dollar deal he got set him for life. Did he give the AAA pitcher Mike Jeffcoat any or the money, Jeffcoat i believe is over at Texas Wesleyan as Manager. My question is if he can get that out of Witt, then maybe he should be our pitching coach. Here is my top ten: Hough, Ryan, Jenkins, Perry, Blyleven, Brown , Rogers, Sele, Darwin and Helling. Ryan, Jenkins, Perry, all hall of famers and Blyleven should be. Wetteland was best reliever and Emu had great year in 79. Now here is a top ten list of pitchers who were given away: Righetti, Henke, Darling, Terrell, Demptster, Davis, Nen, Duscherer, Danks, and Volquez. Volquez being the only exception of getting something in return. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE PITCHING and we still haven't learned that. So is Rogers coming back to town or what? We can probably get him on the cheap side and maybe we can get him to leave the camera men alone? Rogers and another starter i can deal with, say Sheets or Lowe. If the Indians can get Pavano for 1.5 million plus 5.3 in incentives, could we have gotten him for that or are we scared of him because of Jennings? Which leads us to what about Jennings? Is he done?

I'd challenge any major league team to come up with a less talented group for their top 25.
No wonder we only have 3 division titles.

Matt Harrison is only 46 wins away from becoming the second winningest lefty in Rangers history.

Where would Danks be? See if this sounds familiar, Rangers draft left handed pitching prodigy in the first round, #10 overall and in November of the following year trade that player. This player goes on to win 82-79 career record, save 252 games with a 3.46 ERA. This player wins AL Rookie of the Year Award and becomes the first player to pitch a no-hitter and also lead the league in saves. Eckersley later duplicates the feat. But he is the first. So just for the heck of it Dave Righetti, Rags, the big ragu. So Daniels evidently is a Red Sox's fan and hasn't studied up on his history at Cornell University. Those who fail to study the past are doomed to repeat it. The White Sox fleeced with Danks. IF we had just been patient, we could have Danks, Volquez, Galaragga, and Young. I know, i know, but i just don't believe that Daniels has learned anything...... If we are highly touting Harrison, who i do like, then why did we trade Danks? Was Harrison a freaking #1 pick? Is he rated higher than Danks, was he even the best pitching prospect the Braves had?

So now we must again wait til next year, the perpetual process. What kind of irks me is the Rangers still haven't committed to youth, they say we are going with youth but are intending or considering Crede as free agent signee. Let Metcalf play over there or move Kinsler to third. He hits with power and average and is a player but makes too many errors at second base. Remember Soriano had bad defense and the Rangers want defense from their second baseman. So play Duran at second. IF you can move Duran to third then you can move Kinsler there. These moves are going to have to be made so do it now and save the money. Of course i like Mike Young but being a tried and true Ranger, always looking for ways to save money and increase my Financial Flexibility, then i deal Young for some top pitching prospects that i can later give away. Andrus is coming fast, believe it. Don't believe what you hear about how the Rangers are concerned with player development and it is too early. Remember you heard it here first before the sun sets on September 1, 2009 Andrus will be here unless he gets hurt. Then what do we do. Lets start making moves for 2010, 2011, 2012. I don't have a problem with that as most of the everyday players are in place. We are getting close if we can get the starting pitchers. So trade Young and spend that money on starting pitching it is the only thing that makes sense. $20 bucks says once Young is traded he won't be playing SS for his new team even with that Gold Glove.

To answer your question: Yes. Harrison was the Braves top pitching prospect going into the '07 season. Their top 3 overall were 1)Saltalamacchia 2)Andrus 3)Harrison. Also, if the Braves still had Neftali Feliz he'd be their #1 going into this season.

I've got $20 that says Young isn't dealt.

Hey if Rangers History teaches us anything it is that Young will be traded. The face of the franchise has been replaced by Hamilton. All you need to do is go to Academy and see how all of the jerseys are well Hamilton's. But the fact of the matter is Young makes too much money, is not the best fielding shortstop and needs to change positions for the betterment of the team. Once Andrus comes up to play shortstop what position is he going to play? Second, Third or DH? Well i for one don't believe that he has enough power, hits enough home runs to play third. He will be making too much money to play second and DH also. I believe we should move Kinsler to third, play Andrus at short and Duran at second. Young is in his early thirties and is overhyped and overpaid. I am sure that he has grown tired of Rangerland and wants to play for a winner. I do not believe that will occur for another two to three years, if and only if we develop or acquire some starting pitchers. So by then he will be in his mid thirties on the back side of his career, DHing or playing second base. So the smart thing to do is move him now, dump that salary, acquire some top prospects and spend the money on some pitching either this year or next. The Rangers have pretty much moved all of their players either through trade or free-agency because of the money, Pudge, A-Rod, Juan Gonzalez, Kevin Brown, Texiera and many others. For a short period of time, Hicks retained and paid some players but for the most part we have historically gotten rid or let them walk via free agency because we were looking for some "financial flexibility." I love Young but don't believe he fits here in the long term. So do it now while someone will take his contract. It is nothing personal it just shows some long term thinking or plan. Besides the article says Rangers to rely on youth in 2009. What better way to prove this than to move the oldest everyday player on your roster.

What about Steve Comer? He has to be on the list in that group.

Couple of other former sTRangers' pitchers that need addressing in the Hot Stove Tracker...

1. Kameron Loe - TEX JPN
2. Wes Littleton - TEX BOS

Shouldn't these two transactions be a part of the "Tracker" in a "Hot Stove" season?

Where would Steve Foucault rank? How about Dock Ellis and Ron Darling and Walt Terrell and ... er ... disregard the last two...

Greg Harris? Almost the first "switch pitcher" in the majors since the 19th Century? Just needed a couple more MPH on his lefty fastball...

I was a fan of his and he got a bunch of saves. Had that nifty little straight 12-6 curve that really annoyed hitters when he'd drop it on the outside corner (either side).

I hope dwit has had his say .I dont know why he can`t just do one post .

So that mean you do want my action, dgod? I'm saying Young begins and finishes the 2009 season with the Rangers. Put up or shut up.

Hey Silas, if you ask they management and MR. TR i think you will find that they want people to talk about the team. Especially one who goes out there as much as i do. I have an opinion, you may or may not like it. I personally don't care if you do, but you have your opinion. To ostracize and belittle people for exerting their first amendment rights of freedom of expression or speech well. Just is down right Un American. Wake up America. How is it that we have troops fighting in foreign lands to give them freedoms that we evidently do not enjoy here it home? This age of political correctness well is killing this country. The America that i grew up in functioned with this motto. I may not agree with what he is saying but i will defend his right to say it. Now this doesn't mean i have a right to yell fire when their isn't one. But i think it does give me the right to say that the Rangers haven't always committed to one strategy. The facts are the facts and hopefully Daniels has learned to stop trading our young pitchers. IF he hadn't of done it in the first place we wouldn't be pitching starved. Thing that i have consistently said and screamed about was us giving away our young pitching prospects. Probably before you even joined up. So the point is to have fun, i don't take any of this personal, you shouldn't either. I like most of the guys on this post and agree with what they are saying most of the time. What i don't agree with is just because someone offers criticism it doesn't mean they don't love the Rangers. If i didn't care about supporting my hometown team, didn't care to drop $$$$$ out there routinely then they could all fall off the face of the planet for all i would care. The bottom line is i what us to build a team with our young players and then when we find out they are players, then retain them, don't continue to let them walk after we have spent the time and money to develop them. We are so damned close if we can just develop a couple of starting pitchers. This team is going to be a good team if we hit on some pitchers. I want to see us win a World Series in my lifetime. Is that a bad thing?
