Friday Happy Hour at the Elysian Fields Bar & Grill

Welcome to the Elysian Fields Bar & Grill, where we note that Nolan Ryan turns 62 on Saturday.

Bar.JPG* Maybe it's the division. From Anaheim buddy Lyle Spencer: starting with the 1998 season, the Athletics (.548), Angels (.538), Mariners (.509) and Rangers (.489) own a combined .521 winning percentage. Next, at .508, is the AL East, followed by the National League East (.503), NL West (.501), NL Central (.490) and AL Central (.483).

* Said Angels manager Mike Scioscia: "It's been the toughest division in baseball for a good 10 years. The only way you can evaluate that is on how your teams do outside the division -- and our records are better than any other division."

* Randy Johnson is wearing No. 51 for the Giants. That was Noah Lowery's number but he is going with No. 34 in honor of childhood hero Nolan Ryan.

* You knew that Hillerich and Bradsby makes about 1.8 million Louisville bats per year from approximately 40,000 trees. Most are grown on the company's 7,500 acres of timberland in Pennsylvania and New York. Players can choose from 300 popular models.

* As far back as 1926 a commission on baseball rules were discussing the possibility of eliminating the intentional walk.

* You know that Deion Sanders is the only player to play in both a World Series and a Super Bowl. You also knew that Tom Brown was the Green Bay Packers starting safety in the first two Super Bowls and also played for the Senators in 1963. He only hit .147 in 116 at-bats before turning to pro football. By the way, remember the 1966 NFL Championship when Don Meredith threw that interception in the waning seconds of the game? That was Brown that made the interception.

* Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine. All three should go into the Hall of Fame. Between them they did not have one single save in their Major League careers. So? Every pitcher currently in the Hall of Fame had at least one save in their careers. Tom Seaver and Jim "Catfish" Hunter had one.

* Rangers pitcher Kasey Kiker, their first-round pick in 2006: "I'm definitely in the best shape of my life. Everybody tries to point the finger at, 'You're on the disabled list, and you got hurt because you're not in shape.' It's fair, to a point. I've worked as hard as I could."

* Athletics general manager Billy Beane has his own video game now: "MLB Front Office Manager." Allows you to be the general manager of a baseball team. Said Beane, ""I give advice throughout the game. You can even get e-mails with me giving you advice what to do. I'm like the Yoda who takes you through it all."

* Former Red Sox first baseman Sean Casey on free agent catcher Jason Varitek: "I'd be shocked if 'Tek doesn't come back to Boston. The fans love him there. The guys in that clubhouse love 'Tek. I can't imagine Jason Varitek putting on a uniform besides the Boston Red Sox. I saw him a few weeks ago. I know he wants to come back to the Red Sox.

* Nelson Cruz in the Dominican Republic Winter League playoffs: in 23 games he's hitting .354 with 20 runs scored, four home runs and 19 RBI. He has a .400 on-base percentage and a .521 slugging percentage.

Now is the time for our move to the NL West. Re-allignment is what put three AL West Division Titles in our record book, so going to the NL West now would help speed up our process of winning another Division. Once you are in the playoffs anything can happen. So lets do it. Re-allignment should be named our GM, because he/she was able to do what no other GM/Owner has ever done, win....Do not underestimate that role in our division wins. Now on to Cruz, i believe he has taken the next step last fall and matured. He is our RF and hopefully will do what zips says he will do. I personally think he is more than capable and just needs the chance to play. The Rangers are still last out of that group and we haven't lost 100 games. That tells you we have consistently been down, while at least the Mariners have won some. Lets say it together, "it is about the pitching." Roger ain't going to the hall of fame, and i am a longhorn. He seems to have gotten the right advice from someone, just shut up and go away. I love it though because Roger is from Dayton, OH. That's right your not from Texas! If Tex hit .222 then why won't the Red Sox gives us Bucholz for Salty? Surely Salty can hit .222 for them...If i were Boston, i want Teagarden and would trade Bucholz for him. Not only would Tea have that marketing bite, he will be a player. Does anyone other than the Rangers have Salty rated as a better catcher than Tea? What a joke?

"The Boston Tea Garden" does have a nice ring to it, dwid. Is that what you meant by "that marketing bite?"

I'm afraid, however, that Boston is, at this moment, signing Tek, which doesn't take away their desire to sign Salty, Max or Tea (as an understudy), but it does take away our leverage for getting Buchholz for any one of them.

Anyone else whom they could offer is already matched by several of our internal candidates, so let's just develop our 3 C's, get Max up ASAP (since Smoak/Davis will keep us from giving any DH at-bats to a Catcher next year), and let their development re-gain leverage for us to land a future ace.

I'm going to miss Sean Casey. I can't wait for him to sign on to MLB Network. Interesting stat on pitchers in the HOF. I had no idea that they all had at least one save.

Boston Tea Party eightgleasons. Ever heard of it? Hey Julia, it says at the end by Juliasrants, i think we kind of got the message that your name was Julia. So it kinda ain't necessary to add your name at the end. Is Righetti going to the hall of fame? If he is then he has a lot of saves and wins and yes you guessed it a former #1 pick by the Rangers and traded, sound familiar? you guessed it Danks a left hander on his way to stardom, a former #1 pick and traded. The more things change the more they stay the same. Which leads to this. How many former Ranger pitchers are in the hall of fame? Perry, Ryan, and Jenkins then who else? In all of our 37 years of existence, is Kenny Rogers the best homegrown pitcher we ever developed? I like Kevin Brown but hey the Rangers didn't something about him being intelligent and being the player rep.....

Rogers is lurking is he coming back? Don't be surprised if he re-surfaces.
Not Julia.....

TnT should win the catcher job. His ability to work with the pitching staff is unmatched within the organization and might even approximate Varitek's abilities in Beantown.

And, Tek's signing with Boston is a very good sign for Texas. If the Angels do take off again and we can't catch them, it puts us in a much better position so far as the WildCard goes... Tek is a black hole in their batting order and is beginning to get too old to throw anyone out.

Now all we have to do is get past Oakland in the West and whoever is second in the Central... the NYY and RSox shouldn't be factors... The Yankees will drown in bad chemistry and the RSox are losing their punch.

Looking forward to a few Cruz missiles launched in TBIA this year...

Ok Hefe, this will be the last time and then i will let it go: There were 9 pitchers in the league last year that are former Ranger property: Those 9 pitchers had a total of 163 decisions with 96 wins and 67 losses. Those 9 guys, again former Ranger property pitched a total of: 1,407.90 innings, the overall ERA 3.67, Strikeouts were 1,138 and BB was 542. The only players that we have for those 9 pitchers, you guessed it Cruz and Hamilton. The names never to be mentioned again, at least until we trade another young pitching prospect, Volquez 17 wins, Demptster 17 wins, Galarraga 13 wins, Danks 12 wins, Duchscherer 10 wins, Rogers 9 wins, Young 7 wins, Davis 6 wins and Cordero 5 wins 34 saves. And just why couldn't Cordero pitch here? Could or would any of those guys help us this year? It just makes you sick. So how is those guys can stay healthy and perform but our guys can't?

You're a liar. You'll be ranting about those names forever. Just like Righetti, Henke......and all those others you love to pull out of your bag of tricks, or should I say bag of trick?

First of all D'Goodie, you are rude and obnoxious. If someone wishes to put their name on their blogs or posts, who are you to tell them "it ain't necessary". An apology might help! And as for Danks, Volquez, Galarraga, Young and Gonzales, et al, that is past history. Drop it and get on with "life". Maybe if you had a "life" you would not spend so much time here saying the same thing over and over and over.......You post so many things, you contradict yourself frequently. Guess it is hard to remember when one rambles and rants. As we know "rumor has it"!
Oh yeah, when you pick your "implosion" date, please post it here. I'm sure many would be pleased to attend.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that apology. Besides i treked over to her site and you guessed it she is a Red Sox Nation. So who cares. Maybe, just maybe, i have to be professional, show curtesy in my job, be politically correct over there and i just don't want to do that over here. Still think the Rangers have a good team, but we still need to get Sheets. As of now hoping against all hope that we don't have any more injuries, and don't sign any players. Then here it is starting pitchers: Millwood, Padilla, Harrison, Feldman and McCarthy, bullpen:Gabbard, Nippert, Rupe, Madrigal, Turnbow, Wilson, Francisco. Catchers: Salty, Tea, 1B Davis, 2B Young, 3B Kinsler, SS Andrus, UI Vizquel, LF Murphy, CF Hamilton, RF Cruz, 4th OF Byrd, and DH Blalock. That leaves 1 player, the 25th spot on the roster. Hopefully Washington won't spend the entire spring training trying to decide who gets the 25th spot. My money is on Brandon Boggs. Any one else know why we traded Littleton, could he help us here???? What is the amount of money being spent on that group 60 Million or less? Surely for 9 million we could get Sheets.

Ok you guys busted me. The Rangers appear to have learned not to trade our young pitching prospects. We haven't done it in 1 year so that is a record. A new trend. I won't mention it anymore, the past well is never the past as it has continued to happen. But so far for one year Daniels seemed to have learned. At this point, i would deal Young, move Kinsler to third and Duran to second base. I would then spend that money on pitching.

Signing Byrd was very good, they are all signed now. he's a valuable asset, now if only the Rangers will concentrate on pitching. Ben Sheets would be a good move, there's several other quality pitchers out there to be had. Paul Byrd is still a quality starting pitcher, there is several others as well. Guardado might be worth a return, there is several others that would help the absence of Benoit. But the Rangers must make some moves if it hopes to get that winning attitude and style going for 2010. The swagger has to start before the quality players they have start wanting to move to a CONTENDER. That is what we Rangers fans want a Contender with pitching to brag about as well as our explosive offfense. HIRE BEN SHEETS FIRST! Then get some support staff of pitching for our stars.
