The 50 Most Memorable Plays in Rangers History...No. 19-20
Continuing the countdown of the most memorable plays in Rangers history
Vazquez makes history
19. The Rangers actually trailed 3-0 after three innings in the first game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Aug. 22, 2007. Then they scored five in the fourth to take the lead. The big hit that inning was a three-run home run by Ramon Vazquez.
They were still up 5-3 in the sixth when home runs by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Marlon Byrd sparked a nine-run sixth. Home runs by Travis Metcalf and Saltalamacchia help bring home ten more runs in the eighth.
But the Rangers were far from done. Jason Botts hit a two-run double in the ninth. David Murphy drove home a run with a single. Then, with one out and runners at the corners, Vazquez hit one to deep right field that soared over the wall and into history.
The Rangers had set a modern Major League record with 30 runs, more than any team had scored in one game since 1900.
Charlie Hough's wild pitch
20. The surprising Rangers, who had lost 99 games the year before, were in first place by 31/2 games on June 16, 1986 when they faced the Angels at Anaheim Stadium. Through eight innings, Rangers starter Charlie Hough had a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead.
He struck out pinch-hitter Rupert Jones to start the ninth. Jack Howell then lofted a fly ball down the left field line. George Wright, who had just replaced Gary Ward for defensive purposes, caught up with the ball but over-ran it and it fell for a two-base error. Wally Joyner then singled into right field to bring home the tying run.
Hough struck out Doug DeCinces and walked Reggie Jackson. He struck out George Hendrick on a 1-2 knuckleball but it got away from catcher Orlando Mercado and skipped to the screen.
Joyner went to third on the play, then noticed that Hough had forgotten to cover home. He broke and scored easily to give the Angels a 2-1 victory.

I know it's not yet 9am and that we should "let sleeping dogs lie", but where's Toby?

I felt SO bad for George Wright and Charlie in that 9th inning. I have it on videotape and will look at it from time to time - just unbelievable.

Charlie Hough was one of the best Rangers pitcher ever and cheap too a $10,000 waiver claim. He also has the distinction of throwing a homer ball to Reggie Jackson during his 3 home run game in the World Series. How many games did Charlie win for us????
