David Murphy will be sidelined 2-4 weeks after suffering a strained ligament in his right knee in a collision at home plate with Ivan Rodriguez in the third inning. No word yet on his replacement
wow...looking over at the comments on the Bomber's Beat blog, they've taken this opportunity to trash Murphy and wish injury upon him after this "mindless collision" (their words). And this coming from fans who just watched their young standout pitcher go on the DL. Totally classless...but not at all surprising from the pinstriped fans.
Oh yeah, also...LOTS of comments berating Josh & Tom's broadcasts too. I would love it if Tom takes the opportunity tomorrow on air to say a few words to his Yankee listeners.
and obviously, my thoughts go out to murph and wish him the speediest recovery. It's a huge loss to see him out of the lineup.
Tough blow to an excellent young player who was in the midst of a battle for Rookie of the Year and a blow to a fine young Ranger team still in the fight for a playoff berth. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery to David Murphy and continued success to the Rangers as they battle for a playoff berth.
Mindless collision? As I watched the play, Pudge was standing in front of the plate, about 2 feet up the line. This isn't a criticism of Pudge, he was there catching the ball that was thrown from the outfield. David Murphy was running home. He had three choices: run into Pudge as he did, run outside of the baseline and be called out, or stop and allow Pudge to tag him out. [Remember the great play by Max Ramirez a couple of weeks ago. No one questioned the runner then.] This is the big leagues. The play was cleanly made by both players. And, I might add, cleanly described by Josh and Tom in the booth. The replay, shown numerous times, clearly showed that the play was exactly as they described it. Pudge has always been a Ranger fan favorite, and is one of mine. David Murphy is my favorite rookie, a legitimate candidate for American League Rookie of the Year, and one of the reasons that this team has sparked fan interest. And, yes, love from the fans for the way they play on the field. It is sad that both were injured, but these things happen during hard play. It has always been said that New York fans are, at the least, knowledgable about the game. Well, it's time they acted like it.
The only thing mindless about that collision at home plate is Matthew Wallbecks decision to run Murphy. The play wasn't even close and wasn't gonna be. ABREU has a big league arm and Pudge was up the line 20 feet. Which leads me to this question, how many runs has Wallbeck cost us this year and how many games. Murphy should have been held up.
I agree that Walbeck should not have sent Murphy. Bad decision. That play might have cost us the game because they had Ponson on the ropes but, they let him off the hook. But, on the other hand, why did Murphy go into a slide when Pudge was blocking the plate? That is not a time to slide. That is when you lower your shoulder and run him over like Daryl "Moose" Johnston. He wouldn't have injured his knee if he had the proper home plate collision technique.
Furthermore, Walbeck has done a great job. There haven't been many Rangers thrown out at the plate at all this year. Yes, there will be runners thrown out occasionally, but it isn't happening on a regular basis. He just blew it on this occasion. Some times the runner blows it. We've seen that too often this year. Especially from Byrd, not knowing the situation. Walbeck is a good 3rd base coach.
