Blalock activated...switch is on...here's to Kenny Egan

Hank Blalock has been activated and is batting fifth Friday night. Travis Metcalf was sent down. Blalock is at first base. Chris Davis is at third. Ireland's Kenny Egan is fighting for a gold medal at the Olympics on Sunday morning.

When did the United States drop boxing as an Olympic sport?

Sorry, just wondering...

MMA has all but killed ameteur boxing in this country and it wasn't in the best of shape to begin with. It's sad, but I don't see it changing.

It wasn't MMA that killed it - it was organized crime and the brutality (and idiocy of its biggest stars) that killed it.

It probably even started before that. How many kids grew up boxing in the last 20 years? The inner city youth that used to congregate in gyms now play football or basketball if they participate in athletics at all.

The heavy weight division is a joke now. Any action worth watching is below middle weight.

In Australia there are two amateur boxing organisations, each of which ignores the other's existance. The smaller of the two is affiliated to the Olympic movement, and so about 60% of young lads who take up the sport have no chance of representing their country. Personally , I think there is a good case to be made out that boxing should be banned. I do remember seeing years ago a report that someone had invented boxing gloves that made it impossible to do real damage to the opponent. Of course, were such gloves to be introduced, boxing would die a rapid death. We all like a little blood, don't we?
