The Rangers have designated pitcher Sidney Ponson for assignment. The move has something to do with off-field issues although the Rangers would not elaborate.... The pitcher who will replace him is not known.. More on the website
Wow! Mendoza pitched well last night. Maybe he'll take his place. Maybe they'll have to use the roster spot for a draftee.
Would have liked to be a fly on that wall to see what all happened. It must have been pretty bad for the Rangers let go one of the few pitchers that has been consistently pretty solid. At the same time if he was disrupting the team chemistry and didn't want to be here then get rid of that trash.
The same goes for any player that doesn't want to play here. There is too much at stake to let 1 jerk disrupt the team. There will be some team that will pick him up. Just wait!
Surprise, surprise, surprise. Rumor has it he got drunk, what a surprise. How can an organization continue to sign players that have these issues, and be surprised when they "FALL OFF OF THE WAGON"? Luckily he wasn't driving. I thank God that it wasn't Hamilton, but it could have been and may still be. IF that happens, then what do you think of trading a stud pitcher named Volquez, who may have an attitude but no substance abuse issues. The bottom line is the addictions are too great and the statistics are against someone beating that addiction. Steve Howe comes to mind immediately.
Rumor has it that the Rangers "organization" are taking such a strong stand against alcohol and alcoholism that they are going to stop selling it for $6.50 a pop at the stadium. Ha ha, don't believe that one. I was out there Wednesday night and it is just ridiculous how many people get lit and drive home. I will just call it a huge bar. Ponson is clearly an alcoholic and needs to come to that decision himself. How many chances does he get just because he has some ability? Why not just suspend the guy?
Here we go, and i love it. For those who missed it the first time. I was at a bar the other day and ordered a large pitcher of beer and was surprised when Sidney Ponson was brought to my table. You were warned and i told you so. But it leads me to this question, Hamilton has the Narrons surrounding him and helping with his aftercare program. Who did Ponson have? You can't do it alone. I hope the guy gets help, his life is more important than Baseball, but it is too much work. Ponson was giving up cheap hits and was pitching well. It is just sad that people are just too often their own worst enemies.
Looks like Ponson simply dropped back into his old ways again - this is the kind of stuff that originally got him released when he was with Baltimore. Which is too bad from one perspective, he had given us some innings and solid starts in the rotation. But his pitching was becoming increasingly erratic of late and his WHIP was skyrocketing - he seemed to be on the verge of a meltdown anyway, so I say good riddance, on both the clubhouse and on-field levels.
As to his replacement, I'd imagine this might be Kason Gabbard's ticket back up if he can just put together a solid start or two in the next week - Luis Mendoza is still recovering from his shoulder injury, and needs at least another two starts to get extended again before he's an option.
I wouldn't mind seeing Eric Hurley, though. In my opinion, letting him sit in AAA is not going to do him any more or any less favors that bringing him up would - about the only thing he has left to do in AAA is maybe learn to keep the ball down more, and he'll get a quick lesson on that in Arlington anyway. But I kinda doubt that will happen, though - the Rangers probably want to call up Hurley only when they're sure once and for all they're not gonna send him back down.
It appears that Ponson was deficient in the sixth baseball tool. Character.
Good call, Anthony.
