Blalock to first base

The Rangers are moving Hank Blalock to first base. It was his idea and the move is permanent. More on the website... Toby has the day off

Thank God! We now have a first baseman. Does this mean Metcalf is coming....or is it Emerson Frostad? Or is Davis going to play third in the big leagues? Cat appears to be the odd man out. How ironic the guy with the biggest contract has no place to play? Lets say it together, SALARY DUMP. By the way, i saw Cat at the Snooty Pig in Grapevine, Texas the other day. Seems to be a nice guy, but Nostradamus says he is gone as soon as we can get a decent prospect. 6 outfielders is too many and we have plenty of left handed power. By Cat is good to know you.

D'god, most folk posting here would argue the pros and cons of Blalock's proposed move, and whether it would help the team. You, on the other hand can only gleefully predict another player's demise. And I note that your post was made while the just finished game was still in progress. Weren't you even watching? You would have really enjoyed this game - Rangers lost. And Nostradamus???? Is that where you get your informational gems....? To think that I suspected that you made them up! Silly me!!

As to the pros and cons, It ought to help, at least in the short term. This assumes that Blalock can make the transition successfully. Only time will tell. But with Davis a year away, and with both Mayberry and Ramirez taking ground balls at first, we could end up with a delicious log-jam!

Hey D'Goodie.... You stated that Cat appears to be the odd man out, and the guy with the biggest contract has no place to play. Are you talking at 1st base, the outfield or the entire team? Seems as though the figures I have do not match up to that sweeping statement. Maybe my mistake. Too bad the Rangers can not shake the Day Game jinks, as they are now 3 and 11, in that category. At the moment, that is the difference between 1st and 3rd, but plenty of games left for improvements.

Volquez is now 7-1 with an ERA of 1.33. Good to see he got support today up against Cliff Lee. And Cordero got the save.

I think this is a good move to try. Vasquez has been good in Hank's absence and nobody has been decent at first. First base is a short term gig until the Ranger farmhands develop over the next year or two. I never understood why they ever signed the Catman. They cut bait on Broussard and the same could befall the Catman soon. Chris Shelton is a cheap alternative, but he has done nothing to warrant playing time.

My only concern about this is that Hank was having enough trouble hitting. Learning a new position may distract him from getting his swing in shape. He has a lot of work to do.

trngr, the answer is anywhere. Is he going to DH? No, that is Bradleys spot, Left Field, no that is Boggs, Murphy, or Byrd's, Firstbase, no, that is Blalock and Sheltons. Just stating the obvious. I thought Cat was a bad fit here in the first place. He is a good hitter and a good guy. I was just stating that he is not needed here especially at his high dollar contract. I personally would prefer to see Salt play at first and think that would solve our problems now. Laird is a good catcher and i don't believe Salty will ever approach what Laird is doing right now behind the plate. He probably will hit better though. I still don't understand any "organization", that lets it players decide where they want to play. Now Blalock says, i want to play first base? The move should have been made in Spring Training. They let Salt decide he wanted to catch. Whatever happened to an organization saying hey we are going to play you here, because it is in the best interests of the "team". Does anyone here think that Martin, Weaver or any other manager worth his salt, would let the player decide where they want to play. We coaches in the Bronco leagues don't let our players tell us where they want to play, we do what is best for the team. What a novel concept. WE say hey we know you want to play third base, but my son plays there so you play at first or you don't play. Ha Ha.

In the olden days, Peter Edward Rose played second base, left field, third base and first base. He may have gambled on Baseball, oh my what a sin, but the guy made his team better. You never heard him say, hey i want to play this position. Baseball is now an individual sport, the only team sport left is FOOTBALL.

Maybe I misread your post, and if so, sorry, but I think you stated "How ironic the guy with the biggest contract has no place to play?". I was not talking about positions BUT the BIGGEST contract, for an individual player. Your statement seems to infer that Cat has the biggest contract. So be it, not worth losing sleep over and all the rambling. Actually, it really does not matter.

OK, I give up. How does this make the team better? Vazquez, the solid utility man who tends to wear down during the season when he plays regularly becomes the regular 3B. Blaylock will learn a completely new position on the fly while trying to get his stoke back. Cat, who was doing fine maturing up as a trading deadline asset, is wasted.

The Rangers already have one player trying to learn a position at the ML level (Salty). If Blalock wants to play first base let him learn in the minors and as "hitlesswanderings" stated earlier, Hank has not been hammering yet. Cat has done a better job at first base than anyone since Tex departed and he is a hitter.

Let it ride.

I like the move. We need a good bat at 1st. A lot of players can move from infield to 1st. I read post about Hanks bat. He is hitting 299 with 8 walks to 9 s.o. I don`t think he needs a lot of work on hitting.
