The Rangers are going to sign pitcher John Patterson to a Minor League contract. He was released by the Washington Nationals last week. The Rangers see it as a no-risk contract to add pitching depth. More on the website.
Unlike the Sidney Ponson deal, I am okay with this, because Patterson is actually a decent pitcher when healthy.
Of course, the only problem is, he hasn't been healthy in 2 years, making a grand total of 15 starts for the Nationals in '06 and '07, but back in 2005, he was a very valuable pitcher, going 9-7, and throwing 198.3 innings for the Nats, while posting and ERA+ of 130, and a WHIP of 1.195. Aside from the W/L (which is a horrible way to judge a pitcher anyway) Patterson was pitching at borderline ace quality in 2005.
Now, I'm not saying that'll ever happen again - in fact, I'm pretty sure it won't - but he certainly has a better shot of being a productive asset to the team if he's healthy than Ponson.
Great move. Theres no way the rotation stays healthy all year, and if you're going to take a chance on someone there are few better guys to take a chance on than Patterson. He has as much potential as anyone on the Rangers staff.
Good move by the rangers. Patterson will provide depth for the rotation.
the numbers show in patterson's career that he can pitch, but the past three seasons he has had elbow problems
