Monday Morning Manager...The Baseball Oscars

Greetings from Camp Tranquility, where everything is humming along smoothly. We'll have first pitch later this week and then we'll see.

So how about something different? No? Too bad. The Oscars were last night so we're going to have our own Oscars Ceremony this week. All-Time best baseball movies.Kevin_costner_bull_durham_2_1

Yes, it is that quiet here in the desert.

Top five categories but with one difference. Instead of five nominations, we have five suggestions. You don't have to vote for one of the five.

You are welcome to explain your votes. Or you can rant on the Rangers. Or you can talk about Kuwait. Today is their national holiday.

Best Supporting Actress: Madonna - league of their Own (I really don't usually like her, but she did a good job in this movie)
Best Supporting Actor: I'd put in Tom Hanks for League of their Own, tho his category for nominatarion might be best actor.

Best Actress - Glenn Close

Best Actor - Robert Redford "The Natural" ( and I would choose him over Tom Hanks)

Best Movie "The Natural"

Counting down the days till I leave for Suprise :D

1. Amy Madigan, Field of Dreams
2. James Jones, Field of Dreams

3. Susan Sarandon, Bull Durham

4. Kevin Costner, Bull Durham

5. Bull Durham

Tatum O'Neal, James Earl Jones, Susan Sarandon, and for Cobb, Tommy Lee Jones.

All good movies listed as suggestions, but I'll have to go with Bull Durham just because it's one of my favorite movies ever, even without the qualification that it's a baseball movie.

Field of Dreams is amazing and that last scene from 8 Men Out with John Cusack in the stands in New Jersey is a great end to a great movie.

"This will not stand, this aggression against Kuwait." -- GEORGE BUSH, Aug. 6, 1990. That's from the beginning of a great non-baseball movie, The Big Lebowski.

I keep hearing that Brandon McCarhy put on some weight to his slight frame in the offseason. How much weight did he gain?

All I know is that The Natural is far and away the best baseball movie I've ever seen. Way better than Field of Dreams or Bull Durham in my book. Whatever actor played the manager was fantastic, too.

Supporting actress - Madonna
Supporting actor - James Earl Jones

Actress - Susan Sarandon (although I'm glad to see "Fever Pitch" get some love in this category)

Actor - Robert Redford

Movie - "Field of Dreams" (I can't vote against it..."Is this heaven?" "No, it's Iowa." :-))

Maybe not Oscar worthy, but definitely my favorite baseball movies performances.

Best Supporting Actor:

Jon Lovitz as Ernie Capadino in “A League of Their Own” (“Get these wild animals out of here”)

Robert Wuhl as Larry Hockett in “Bull Durham” (“Geezus, I hate Sears”)

Wesley Snipes as Willie Mays Hays in “Major League” (back when he was really an actor)

Studs Turkel as Hugh Fullerton in “Eight Men Out” (inspired casting)

Best Supporting Actress:

Amy Madigan as Annie Kinsella in “Field of Dreams” (I would love having Annie as a neighbor)

Meagan Cavanagh as Marla Hooch in “A League of Their Own” ( you knew I would include her :)

Best Actress:

Susan Sarandon as Annie Savoy in “Bull Durham” – the one, the only, no one else even comes close

Best Actor:

Kevin Costner as Crash Davis in “Bull Durham” and as Billy Chapel in “For The Love of the Game” – I don’t think you can make a baseball movie without him. I’ve had a couple of pitchers tell me that the Costner’s scenes on the mound where he’s thinking through the pitches in ‘For The Love of the Game” is pretty close to reality.

Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs in “The Natural” – because he’s Robert Redford and that’s all you need to know

D.B. Sweeney as Shoeless Joe Jackson in “Eight Men Out” – conflicted, heartbreaking, we don’t know what really happened but Sweeney’s performance rings true

Best Picture:

“Bull Durham” – the perfect baseball picture – did you know writer/director Ron Shelton played minor league baseball with the late Johnny Oates?

“The Natural” – it’s that Robert Redford thing again….plus it’s a very, very good movie

“A League of Their Own” – who said girls don’t know anything about baseball?

http://emc.mlblogs.com/

1. Madonna
2. James Earl Jones

3. Geena Davis

4. Redford

5. Field of Dreams

Honorable Mention to Jon Lovitz in "A League of Their Own"

Best Supporting Actress: (write-in candidate) Barbara Hershey, The Natural (We should have seen her coming)

Best Supporting Actor in a Baseball Movie: Charlie Sheen, Major League

Best Actress: Geena Davis, A League of Their Own (I know the kneejerk thing is going to be to vote for the totally silly portrayal by Susan Sarandon in the vastly overrated Bull Durham, but I have to cast my ballot for any girl who puts on catcher's gear for an entire movie).

Best Actor: Robert Redford, The Natural (He struck out The Whammer, for petes sake!)

Best Movie: The Natural (hooray for the memorable Hollywood ending...the book's was much too dark)

Gil its so good to see you post on here!!!

Best Supporting Actress: gotta go with the Hooch...

Best Supporting Actor: Gary Busey for his portrayl of Chet 'Rocket' Steadman in Rookie of the Year. His fine portrayl of the hurler on his last leg as mentor and father type figure is a touching role for the centuries.

Second would be Christopher Lloyd as the head angel in Angels in the outfield

Best Actress: I hate Susan Sarandon, and just like the "love interest" ruins an otherwise awesome movie like Tombstone, so Sarandon ruins Bull Durham.....

Gotta go with Geena Davis, anyone who can look that hot catching in a skirt wins in my book, but Gleen Close is pretty good too

Best Actor: Barry Pepper as Roger Maris

Best Movie: The Natural, although a close second is Billy Crystal's *61

Best Supporting Actress: Tatum O'Neal, Bad News Bears
Best Supporting Actor: Robert NeNiro, Bang the Drum Slowly

Best Actress: Geena Davis, A League of Their Own

Best Actor: Michael Moriarity, Bang the Drum Slowly

Best Movie: A League of Their Own

1. Amy Madigan, Field of Dreams
2. Charlie Sheen, Major League

3. Glenn Close, the Natural

4. Robert Redford the Natural

5. The Natural - great movie, with some great shots of the RBiA. Major League is a close second, though - great soundtrack on that one.

Lori Petty - A League of Their Own
Charlie Sheen - Major League

Geena Davis - A League of Their Own & Glenn Close - The Natural (tie)

Gary Cooper - Pride of the Yankees & Walter Matthau - Bad News Bears (tie)

Eight Men Out

1. Margaret Whitton, Major League
2. Darren McGavin, The Natural

3. Susan Sarandon, Bull Durham

4. Robert Redford, the Natural

5. The Natural

Best Supporting Actress
Madonna - A League of Their Own

Best Supporting Actor in a Baseball Movie

James Jones - Field of Dreams

Best Actress Susan Sarandon - Bull Durham

SUSAN!

Best Actor

Kevin Costner - Bull Durham

Best Movie

Bull Durham

1. Madonna
2. Wild Thing

3. Geena Davis

4. Robert Redford

5. I have a tie with these nominees, The Natural and Field of Dreams

Best movie? Has to be "For the love of the game" because my wife liked it as much as I did.-I loved the baseball bits and she loved the romantic bits.

Best actor? Probably Redford, because Costner wasn't acting- the guy obviously just aches to be a ball player.

Best actress? Hey! Who's idea was it to let broads in a baseball movie anyway?

Oops! I forgot to vote for the category that wasn't asked for. That of " best Baseball Dog"

Of course, this goes to Toby, but with an honourable mention to Jacquy, who sat beside me and suffered through last seasonas we watched on mlb.com
