Tennessee Waltz, Day 4...Rangers trade Guzman for Chris Shelton

The Rangers have traded outfielder Freddy Guzman to the Detroit Tigers for first baseman Chris Shelton, who played at Triple A Toledo in 2007 and hit .269 with 14 home runs and 65 RBI. In 2004-2006 with the Tigers he had 807 at-bats and hit 34 home runs with 109 RBI.

Guzman is a center fielder but the Rangers never really looked at him as an option out there.

The Rangers are looking at Milton Bradley and Corey Patterson as two guys who could possibly upgrade the outfield.

Possible 1st baseman? Not much better out there. Let's just hope he has the kind of season he was having when he hit those homers off R.A. Dickey.

Can anyone tell me why Nate Gold isn't being talked about as the Rangers 1B in 08?

I guess the Rangers are not going after Mike Lamb anymore. Still, this a very solid pickup. Shelton's still relatively young and has had more success in the majors than Jason Botts.

This is funny

"Three teams, including the Orioles, made offers to the Tigers on Monday to acquire him, but they found none of them to their liking". from Tigers.com

I guess the other two offers must have been pretty bad. Freddy Guzman was the best they could get.

Again, very solid trade.

Shelton solid? Hmmmm. Traded straight-up for a .213 hitter with no power, no track record...no nothing. Based on what he was traded for, it appears to me Shelton is not exactly a cornerstone. Anyone brought in to supplant Botts is an upgrade, so I'll go with you riega, and give Shelton a chance. (We've recently had Will Clark, Rafael Palmeiro, Mark Texiera at First Base-all competent hitters and fielders...and now a cast of cast-offs.....VERY SAD, methinks, how low we have sunk.

Chris Shelton has 249 Games played in the major leagues has a .281 Batting Average and hit 35 Home Runs. Not too shabby, Shelton was designated for assignment, so the Tigers risked losing him for nothing. The Tigers probably felt sorry for us. Now that is not hard to believe. I believe Shelton originally was a catcher, but was blocked by that Catcher, Pudge Rodriguez, that was supposed to have given up catching 10 years ago.****** that Pudge still plugging away and proving the Rangers wrong again. Not a hard thing to do. So maybe Shelton is going to catch now that Daniels said Salty was going to AAA. Question? How does Salty play for the freaking Braves, but he can't play here? RIDICULOUS!

A Pudge @ 50% of what he was is better than what we have at the position. Pudge hits and throws at one time was the best of all time. Something we haven't had alot of around here. Every year that home grown talent, improved. What did he get for it? Free-agency a World Series title that he was a huge part of and another World Series played in. I was so happy for him when he won that title and enjoyed watching the Marlins win that World Series. I watch that guy and said boy he sure doesn't look like he is done. Sure enough i was right.

I think this is a good deal for us. Shelton will play for us. Not so sure why Guzman wasn't given more of an opportunity here. We need a CF, so what do we do? We trade a CF for a first baseman. I think Shelton has a greater upside. Looks like the Tigers were looking for a AAA CF, a filler as my colleagues would say. Shelton plays everyday in my book and probably is ready to do so. I still think he was originally a catcher.

Nate Gold isn't seen as a major league caliber hitter at an offensive position. If any other team in baseball had seen him as such he could've been had for $50,000 in this morning's rule V draft. He was not selected.

Funny you mention R.A. Dickey, as he was selected in the Major League section of the Rule V draft by Seattle.. Shelton might have a chance at him again.. wouldn't that be funny.
