Beavan signs

Blake Beavan has signed. The Rangers have officially announced it. The right-handed pitcher from Irving High School is not going to Navarro College. He won't pitch in a Minor League game this summer but will report to Surprise to begin workouts.

I'm throwin' up my "K" hand sign. Here's to the filthiest slider he's ever seen!

I am glad we got him signed. However, i would like to know the total value of the contract and the number of years involved. Rick Porcello, who i believe is a better pitcher and more major league ready just signed for 4 years at 7.28 million. I would like to compare the two deals and see the difference in the amount of money. Lets say hypothetically, Beavan is getting 1 million a year for 4 years( for convenience) with a 1.5 million dollar signing bonus, that makes his deal worth 5.5 million. Porcello got 7,280,000, thats a difference of $1,780,000. Spread that out over four years and that is $445,000 a year, roughly the equivalent of a guy who rides the pine and makes the major league minimum. The point is we could have had both of them, #2 Porcello, if he stays healthy is going to hit the Major Leagues probably 2, 3,maybe 4 years before Beaver even sniffs the big leagues. To me if i could speed up the improvement of the major league club, by paying $445,000 @ year then i would have done it. Agree or Disagree? P.S. Why draft Borbon, when we allegedly hate, Boras?

This is great news! I just have three questions:

1. When is Volquez getting called up?

2. Who are they going to send down when Volquez gets called up?

3. And...when is Volquez getting called up?

Newsflash, Rangers set to field competitive within the next 20 years, hopefully. Newsflash, Rangers out of it next season, before that season starts. Newsflash, Rangers out of it before 2009 season starts. Newsflash, why is Hicks still the owner? Hasn't he looked at his return on investment? Very poor, something the corporate raider prides himself on, return on investment. Where is Richard Rainwater, Rusty Rose and the Bass Brothers when we need them? Time to hire Rainwater to run the team. What an investor he is. He makes Hicks look like a schoolboy. Go ESL Partners!!!Hey Hicks, time for you to sell the team for around $400 Million and walk with your $200 Million. How much longer must we endure. Does he not know how bad of an owner he is????? Do we have to wait until his profit margins are in negative numbers before he bails? Get out, Get out, Get out! Go! Leave. Take the last train to anywhere. Bye!

I remember one time they were saying how the Bass boys did wonders. If I had that much money I would throw it at the problem till it worked. Give Botts more money and he will hit better. $445,000.00 is chicken feed, Give every team member a raise and it will do wonders for this team. Money buys all. dgod be careful what you wish for you might get it.

Go Hicks. The money has been spent for professional baseball players and they have not delivered. Blame the messenger! Pay more money! Spend the big bucks! Remember Zito. Bet the Giants would like some of their money back.

How about the players go on a commission basis. Get paid when you deliver. Bet dgod can come of with a plan to make the players happy.

BTW good game tonite. CJ looks like a closer. Byrd is our CF as he hustles better than anything lately. It looks like he enjoys the game, something that can not be said for all. Watch the players eyes it says a lot.

Batty, i don't think money is the answer. I think going with the youth is. I want Hicks and Company to blow the thing up, admit they haven't done thing rights and change the course of our franchise. Commit to a total re-build. Goodbye Millwood, Padilla, Young, Catalanotto and Wilkerson. Lets hit ROCK BOTTOM. We aren't that far from that anyway. Lets hit it hard and bounce back like a rubber ball to great heights. I was really excited until i heard Daniels speak the other day. And another thing. Don't draft Boras's guys. If that is what we are doing then don't repeat the same mistakes. I am glad Borbon didn't sign with us, hopefully we finally learned not to deal with Boras. He isn't doing anything wrong, he is trying to get top dollar for his players. I just think, well we need a salary cap and that would put a stop to this non-sense. Slot the money, like the NFL and NBA do. Attorneys are killing this country, not just in the sporting arenas. Look what is going on up in Washington DC? Look what goes on in the Criminal and Civil Courts and look what is going on for any high profile person. Imus, who i don't like, is getting sued by one of the basketball team for what he said against the group. He has already apologized, got his $20,000,000 and now she wants to sue? Give me a break! Being an Attorney, used to mean something, they were advocates. Now they just say anything to prove a case, without any bearing of truth and integrity. To me that makes them nothing more than prostitutes!

Beware when you hear: "Isn't it true, Officer." When i hear that, you can bet that it is not anywhere near the truth and is only said to confuse the jury. No if it were about the money, to me, i would be an attorney and be getting my DWI clients off for about $10,000 a case. DWI, the most litigated and lucrative offense for a criminal defense attorney.

Dgod, regarding your Porcello/Beavan rant, I think you’re misunderstanding that Beavan’s 1.5 million is the vast majority of money he will make in the minors. Tex signed out of GTech for 3.5 mil and made “only” $750,000 in his first year in the majors by comparison, so the difference in the Porcello deal really is as big as it seems at 5.78 million. That’s 5.78 million that the Rangers used to sign Main, Hunter, Ramirez, West, etc.

The other factor that you failed to mention is the fact that Porcello and Boras were demanding a Major League contract. Which means that Porcello automatically goes on the 40 man roster in 2008. Staying on the 40 man roster will exhaust all of his options by the start of the 2011 season, so that coming out of spring training in 2011, no matter where he is in his development he will have to be on the active 25 man roster.

He will be the third test case for a high school pitcher getting a Major League contract. The last, Josh Beckett, worked out well for the Marlins. The first, Todd Van Poppel didn’t work out so well for the A’s. So, while there’s a possibility that Porcello develops into a #1 or #2 starter, but there’s also the possibility that he ends up pitching middle relief in with mixed results. Maybe we’ll see him in the Texas pen one day.

Signing a ML deal at his age also assures that he’ll become a free agent at age 27 and we should all know by know that Boras’ clients always chose free agency of contract extensions. So, even in a best case scenario development-wise, the Tigers spend 3 years developing him in the minors and another 2 or 3 years teaching him to pitch in the big leagues so that by the time he’s an impact pitcher he’ll only be under their control for about 3 more years before the Jersey boy leaves, in the prime of his career and signs with the Yankees. That’s the GOOD version of what could happen. The bad version is Van Poppel or worse.

I’m not sure were you get this alleged hate of Boras from either. He’s fairly universally despised and there are a few organizations that refuse to work with him, but Texas has never been one of them. Personally I’m perfectly OK with taking the 36th pick next year instead of Borbon and so was JD it would appear.

Also, one more point about Porcello. It wasn't just the Rangers that passed on him. He went 27th overall.
