Friday Happy Hour at the Elysian Fields Bar & Grill

Welcome to the Elysian Fields Bar & Grill, where Donovan's Reef is still considered a classic among holiday movies.Bar_20

* Frank Catalanotto said he's most proud of the improvement that he has shown defensively in the outfield and the Rangers will pay him $25,000 bonus if he wins a Gold Glove. They'll pay him $100,000 if he wins the Most Valuable Player Award and $50,000 if he's the MVP of the World Series.

* Catalanotto has a $5 million option for 2010 with a $2 million option. Goes up to $5.5 million with a $2.25 million buyout if he gets 1,000 plate appearances in 2008-09 with at least 500 in 2009.

* Rangers general manager Jon Daniels: "Ron Washington thinks he could even turn me into a Gold Glove fielder."

* Remember Ryan Ludwick? He's going to camp with the St. Louis Cardinals on a Minor League contract but will likely play in Japan if he doesn't make that team.

* Brewers outfielder Kevin Mench ended the season with a streak of 118 consecutive at-bats without a home run, a career high.

* Gary Pettis will be the seventh former Rangers player to end up as a coach for them. The others were Jackie Brown, Bobby Cuellar, Bucky Dent, Toby Harrah, Bobby Jones and Tom Robson.

* Rangers coaches who won Gold Gloves during their playing days? Pettis was one. Orel Hershiser won as a pitcher in 1988. Others include Tommy Helms, Jimmy Piersall, Nellie Fox and Davey Lopes.

* Former Rangers pitcher Bobby Witt is on the Hall of Fame ballot that will be distributed to writers in December.

* Catalanotto said Ameriquest Field is his favorite place to hit. Vladimir Guerrero as well. He has a .420 average there, highest among active players with at least 120 plate appearances. Magglio Ordonez is hitting .407 there. They are the only two active players over .400 at Ameriquest with at least 120 plate appearances.

* The Atlanta Braves are trying to trade pitcher Tim Hudson but a Rangers official said, "There are a lot of red flags there."

* Just for the heck of it: Randy Knorr.

* Julio Franco was picked off eight times in five years with the Rangers. You can now tell your friends who holds the Rangers career record for being picked off base.

* If they ask you who holds the Rangers record for most steals of home, tell them Bump Wills. He's the only Ranger to do it twice. Tried it five times. So did Mike Hargrove and Dave Nelson but they only made it once.

* STATS Inc. shows that Kevin Reimer was 0-for-4 in attempting to steal home. Remember Reimer but don't remember him trying to steal home four times. But then it also says Buddy Bell and Steve Buechele were both 0-for-3 stealing home.

* Jerry Reuss, upon being introduced to Frank Sinatra by Tommy Lasorda, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch the name."

* Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby committed 500 errors in his career. That's the most ever by a player born in Texas.

* According to STATS Inc., some guy named Herman Long played from 1889-104 and committed 1,096 errors. That's apparently the most ever.

In response to former Rangers who won Gold Gloves.....it made me wonder why on our pennant-winning run in the late 90's (our ONLY glimpse of glory), why didn't Daryl Hamilton not win a Gold Glove? If memory serves me, he had Z-E-R-O errors playing the roomy Ballpark in Arlington centerfield. Not an easy feat to go error-less, much less not winning a Gold Glove. Hats off to Daryl Hamilton anyway for an excellent, and often overlooked, solid performance. Can you still play center Daryl? We need you MORE than ever now!
