Moreland, Hamilton head for Round Rock

Arlington, Texas–The Texas Rangers today announced that outfielder Josh Hamilton and infielder Mitch Moreland will begin minor league rehab assignments with Triple-A Round Rock this weekend.

Moreland, who went on the 15-day disabled list on April 29 (retroactive to April 28) and underwent surgery by Dr. Keith Meister to remove a loose body from his elbow that day, will join Round Rock on Saturday when the Express play at Nashville at 6:35 CT. He is batting .304 with one homer and 9 RBI in 16 games for the Rangers this season.

Hamilton, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations on April 27, is expected to debut with Round Rock on Sunday, when the Express play at Nashville at 2:05 p.m. CT. Round Rock also plays in Nashville on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. CT before opening a four game series with Omaha at Dell Diamond on Tuesday evening.

The 34-year-old Hamilton has spent the entire 2015 season on the 15-day disabled list as he continued to undergo rehab from right shoulder surgery on February 4. Hamilton’s AC joint was repaired during the surgery performed by Dr. Meister in Arlington.

Following his trade to Texas, Hamilton has been working out in the Rangers’ extended spring program in Surprise, Arizona since April 28. He played in Rangers’ extended spring games on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with 13 total at bats and one walk in the three games. In his final Arizona action today against Seattle’s extended spring team, he was 1-for-5 with a 3-run home run while playing 5 innings in left field.
