Monday afternoon….Beltre, Saunders, Soria

Monday afternoon in Arlington

Third baseman Adrian Beltre said it was “probably smart” to go on the disabled list but added he disagreed with the decision.

Joe Saunders, on the disabled list with a bruised left foot, is supposed to throw a bullpen today. The next step would be some fielding drills.

Manager Ron Washington said if the Rangers havea lead on Monday night then Joakim Soria would be the closer. Alexi Ogando got a save on Sunday because Soria had pitched the two previous games. Washington said Ogando will still get chances to close but Soria is still the closer.

Why don’t teams leave their shortstop in place on left-handed shifts and move the thirdbaseman behind second base? This would keep your double-play combination in place. Last week the Rangers Had a play at second during a shift on I believe David Ortiz in which Adrian Beltre looked very much like a man out of position. He rather clumsily avoided a runner sliding in and could not make the throw to first to get the DP. I would not be surprised if this is part of the issue with his sore quad.
