Rangers acquire Travis Blackley

The Rangers acquired LHP Travis Blackley from the Astros for cash considerations. He will be placed on the Triple-A Round Rock roster, not on the 40-man roster.

Blackley went 1-1 with a 4.89 ERA in 42 relief appearances for the Astros this season. He was designated for assignment Friday by Houston and outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City Saturday. The move occurs a day after the club announced Matt Harrison would be out for the season with a lingering back issue.

“Backup” is about the way Daniels described this addition. Eventually, they will have to replace Ogando as a starting pitcher. He doesn’t have enough “stuff” to be a starter. When he sticks to a fastball and slider combo he can maintain velocity and location; those pitches are eough alike to be consistent. When he tries to spin it he loses both velocity and control.
