Rangers acquire Rios

The Texas Rangers have acquired outfielder Alex Rios and cash considerations from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Rangers will make an additional move with the 25-man roster when Rios reports.

Rios, 32, has batted .277 with 12 home runs, 22 doubles, and 55 RBI in 109 games for Chicago this season. He ranks among American League leaders in outfield assists (T5th, 8) and stolen bases (6th, 26). He has batted .324 (12-37) with 6 RBI during a current 9-game hit streak to end his White Sox career, one of 4 hit streaks of 7-or-more games in 2013. Rios is batting .308 (24-78) with one home run and 15 RBI since the All-Star break. He is one of 6 A.L. players with at least 15 RBI since the break, joining the Rangers’ Adrian Beltre (15). He also had an 18-game hit streak from May 5-24 that ranks T2nd-longest in the league in 2013.

Rios has a career .278 average with 155 home runs and 682 RBI over 1408 games with Toronto (2004-09) and Chicago-AL (2009-13). This season is his 5th career 20-stolen base campaign. He was an All-Star in both 2006 and 2007, finishing 5th in A.L. Rookie of the Year voting in 2004. He established career highs with 25 home runs and 91 RBI for the White Sox last year. Rios is one of 4 active players with at least 300 doubles, 50 triples, 150 home runs, and 200 stolen bases in their career, joining Carlos Beltran, Derek Jeter, and Jimmy Rollins.

With this move, the Rangers now have 3 of the A.L.’s top 7 in stolen bases in 2013.

With the addition of Rios, the Rangers now have a full 40-man roster.

Wrong again T.R.! Looks like Chicago wanted to dump his salary and blinked. Daniels won the showdown. Most likely the Rangers just pickup his total salary and White Sox get nothing in return other than financial relief. Now go get Young from Phillies for Lindbloom..

If Rios performs, Rangers pick up entire salary and provide player. If he doesn’t perform they pickup a smaller portion of the salary. A win-win situation for the Rangers.

I bet Wash is salivating over Rios’ speed given what just happened in LA with Andrus and Martin. The Rangers keep getting more exciting and relevant!

A change of scenery should be positive for Rios and the Rangers.
