Berkman aims August return

“I’m coming back.”
Designated hitter Lance Berkman, Thursday afternoon

Berkman met with general manager Jon Daniels before Wednesday’s game and felt it was best to stick with the team. He said he has improved over the last two days, as he was able to run at about 50 percent before Thursday’s game.

Berkman has a personal goal to begin his medical rehabilitation assignment either August 8th or 9th. If he’s able to hit his goal, Berkman thinks he could be activated for the next homestand, which starts August 13th against the Brewers. He still plans to travel with the team after tonight’s game.

why don’t the rangers call up butler?

Butler is not on the 40 man roster so it would take a move to in that regard to get him to the big leagues. He’s pretty unremarkable against right handed pitching, especially considering that he’s a 27 year old at Triple-A. He’s always crushed the lefties down there. He’s not a great defender either so he’s fairly limited as to what role he’d play in a major league club. He’s probably no more than an emergency option in case the Rangers can’t pull a post waiver trade in August, Nelson Cruz gets suspended and/or injuries crop up at the big league level.

Another quick note on Butler – He’s been exposed to the rule V draft in each of the past 2 years and no teams have bit on him so he’s not been viewed as a valuable asset at the big league level by other clubs either.
