Sunday’s With Toby: Nicknames, A Kameron Loe Sighting and The First Pitch

Toby BlogToby descends from a pack of wild dogs that have roamed the mystical lands of the Transvaal since the beginning of time.  He is currently wandering the majestic White Tank Mountains of Arizona keeping one eye on the baseball and the other on his food bowl.  Every Sunday he steals TR’s laptop to communicate his canine thoughts to the world and wonder whatever happened to Doug Davis.

The Wild AL West

—The Astros are taking a step in the right direction not only through rebuilding, but also with their fans off the field.  This week they re-opened six baseball/softball fields in the Houston area. “So this is one of the first stepping stones that we can do to encourage the kids to play baseball.” said former Astro Jimmy Wynn who attended the ceremonial re-opening.

—Looks like M’s OF Franklin Gutierrez has overcome his ongoing health problems, and will alternate with Michael Saunders in the leadoff position for Seattle.  And there’s a possibility that former Ranger RHP Kameron Loe could be in the M’s bullpen.

—Oakland OF Yoenis Cespedes (who in 17 games against Rangers pitching sports a 1.087 OPS with 10 RBIs) had some advice for fellow Cuban defector Yasiel Puig who  was signed by the Dodgers (and we have no idea what the pictures at the top of the link have to do with the rest of the blog entry).

Toby Barksbichette

A little old tyme baseball in Arizona last week when umpire Tim McClleland called balls and strikes from behind the pitcher’s mound during an Angels/Brewers game.  Check out the story and MLB video

The title of this MLB video speaks for itself:  “Dante Bichette teaches Rockies the fundamentals of proper mullet maintenance”

This week’s Birthdays: Nicknames

They just don’t have the baseball nicknames the way they used to in the “good old days” as evidenced by the lack of current major leaguers in this week’s birthday list.

Reds IF Raymond “Chappy” Charles was born March 25, 1881.  “El Ducquecito” – Adrian Hernandez is 39 (maybe) on March 25th.  Former Ranger Lee” Outfield Is An Idiot’s Position” Mazzilli turns 55 on March 25th.    Another former Ranger IF Dave “The Hoss” Hostetler turns 55 on March 27th.  Also born March 27th: HOF IF Miller “Mighty Mite” Huggins in 1878, and Ranger nemesis Giant Gerald Dempsey “Buster” Posey turns 26 on the 27th.  Born March 28th 1909: Cubs RHP Lon “ The Arkansas Hummingbird” Warneke and born March 28 1898 Pirates RHP Moses J. “Chief” Yellow Horse.

Birthday of the Week: he held the record for most hits in a season (154 games) for 84 years until Ichiro Suzuki broke it with 262 hits (in 162 games) “Gorgeous George” or “Gentleman George” Sisler was born March 24th 1893.
