Last Call from the Desert: Ron Washington on Leonys Martin

“I don’t think you’ll see Carl (Lewis) this year, not from me. But you don’t have to be fast to be a good baserunner. I’ve made enough mistakes to caution these guys against what happened to me.”

Lance Berkman, who was helping Gary Pettis with some baserunning instruction earlier this week.desert

Rangers manager Ron Washington continues to be impressed with the way Leonys Martin is swinging the bat, against both left and right-handed pitchers. Washington said Martin could win the job in center on a full-time basis if this keeps up.

“The kid can hit,” Washington said. I’m getting him in against everyone and he isn’t showing any sign of giving in to left-handers,” Washington said. “If this continues, and we feel like he can handle lefties as well as righties, which he has always handled in his career, it’s a possibility.”

The Rangers lost to the White Sox, 8-4, on Wednesday and Washington was miffed at six runs coming across the plate after two outs. Said Washington, “That’s not acceptable but we have to put guys out there and see what they can do.”

Left-handed reliever Joe Ortiz is having an impressive camp and he struck out the side in his one inning of work.

The Rangers are 11-for-61 with runners in scoring position so far this spring.

The Rangers have hired Kenji Nimura to be Yu Darvish’s translator this year. Nimura has worked with Hideki Kuroda and the Dodgers previously but he is not your average Japanese interpreter. He can also speak fluent Spanish and interpret for the Latin players.

The Rangers have never had a full-time Spanish translater. Spanish broadcaster Eleno Ornelas does it much of the time with strength and conditioning coordinator Jose Vazquez also called upon when he’s not busy. Julio Borbon is also very accommodating in translating for some of his teammates.

Well I continue to be impressed by Gentry myself. I hate to see him out with an injury today. I am amazed last year how Gentry was passed over & was highly underated at times~even when he excelled. I know he isn’t what some refer to as a “powerhitter” but he has always been very consistently productive when he plays. He can drive in players on base with a single~ double or triple. And he is always do what ever is asked~ as I recall~ even pitched an inning last year when we were in a bind. (= I feel he is excellent at centerfield (one of the best) ~ made what others might consider impossible catches & throws. He was also great at LF. He is a fighter & plays the game with passion. I guess some aren’t able to see this. It will be a shame if he spends time on the bench ~ I hate to see talent such as his wasted. I know that the Rangers have invested alot in Martin but I am not that impressed ~ today for example.

He has no power. He’s a great defender but in all other areas he pales to Martin.

Marsha, I think Gentry is married.

Kemo ~ what does that have to do with his ability to play baseball ? Except make him even more focused.

Gentry’s only problem at bat is that he gives the impression of being a “passive” hitter. No pop, no power. Truely an excellent fielder – even Josh Hamilton gave it up to Craig for being able to “pick it”
in center field “better” than himself…and that was saying alot..

I agree with you Jim. I know the Rangers would love to replace Hamilton with a real slugger & love to watch homeruns as much as anyone else. I wish he had that kind of power~ he himself has stated that he doesn’t come on like that but is fast enough to get on base & as you know tough enough to knock someone off the base if they get in his way. He also can bring in runs with his single~ double or triple. Wish Wash hadn’t benched him last year when he was hot to allow personal favorites to play who weren’t ~like MY. I would have rather seen him traded~ hate to see that kind of talent go to waste.

I also would like to see him traded. Only problem, he has no real value.

I like Grentry as much as the next guy, but he is limited in the skills he is able to bring to the game, yes he is great defensively and can steal a base, but the Rangers have just lost Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli and Michael Young in off season moves and must find a way to replace their offensive production, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone to find out that Washington wants Martin to step up and win the starting CF job. Martin has first division starter type talent, with comps ranging from Johnny Damon to Jacoby Elsbury, so yes they want him to win the job.
But Gentry will prove to be a very valuable asset to team, starting or reserve.

Right now Gentry really needs to get healthy. And fast, because if he doesn’t win the starting CF job he may not have a spot of the roster, with Luery Garcia being able to play CF as well as SS and 2nd base, he offers more as a reserve than Gentry, so a likely scenario is if Martin wins CF, Garcia is backup CF and utility INF.

The Rangers have much bigger fish to fry other than finding a way to get Craig Gentry on the field. In life only the strong survive. Gentry is going to have to force Washington to play him, much like David Murphy has done. If he doesn’t he will likely go the way of Jules Borbon. Being a nice and scrappy guy only counts in the movies.
Rocky, Rudy and Brians Song are available on DVD for those who love a good underdog story.
