Tuesday afternoon: Greinke, pitching
The Rangers are definitely in the running for pitcher Zack Greinke but it does not appear he is close to signing anywhere.
The Rangers want another starting pitcher but, beyond Greinke, they would rather trade for one than go after what’s available on the free agent market. The two pitchers that interest them are R.A. Dickey of the Mets and James Shields of the Rays.
The Mets are willing to talk to other teams about Dickey, who is a free agent after this coming season.
Nobody is really sure what the Rays are going to do other than they have starting pitching to trade. David Price is not available. The Rangers like Shields, who is signed for $9 million in 2013 with a club option of $12 million for 2014. General manager Andrew Friedman said the club is willing to listen on starting pitchers but the Rays closely guard them because they can’t afford to go heavy in the free agent market.
