Martin Perez to start Saturday vs. A’s
The Rangers announced today that Martin Perez will start against the Athletics Saturday. It will be his first Major League start and second big league appearance after pitching 2/3 innings in Wednesday’s win over the Tigers.
Perez gave up four runs, one of them earned, on two hits in his Major League debut Wednesday. The 21-year-old left-hander struck out one, walked one, and threw 20 pitches, 11 of them for strikes.
He was the second-youngest pitcher to appear in a Major League game this season and the seventh-youngest in team history to make his big league debut with the Rangers. The last time someone younger took the mound for the Rangers was April 6, 2006, when Fabio Castro, also 21 at the time, made his Major League debut.
In 15 starts with Triple-A Round Rock this year, Perez was 5-5 with a 4.59 ERA and was 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last two starts before getting called up Tuesday.
