Rangers select RHP Josh McElwee in the 20th round
The Rangers took Newberry College right-handed pitcher Josh McElwee with the No. 636 overall pick in the 20th round.
McElwee went 5-4 with a 3.99 ERA, striking out 97 and walking 35 over 79 innings in 13 starts during his senior season this year. He redshirted before his junior in 2010 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. In 2011, he started three games, going 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA while striking out 18 and walking four over 16 2/3 innings.
His 307 career strikeouts are a school record. McElwee went 17-12 years during his college career with a 3.90 ERA. McElwee batted .273 with 15 runs and 20 RBIs.
McElwee was the third straight right-handed pitcher taken by the Rangers today and the 11th pitcher selected by the Rangers in this year’s draft, all but one of which has been right-handed.
