Rangers pick OF Jameis Winston in the 15th round
The Rangers completed the second day of this year’s draft by selecting Hueyton High School (Ala.) outfielder Jameis Winston.
Winston, a 6-foot-4, 190-pounder, is the nation’s most highly-touted quarterback prospect, according to Rivals.com, and is committed to play football for Jimbo Fisher at Florida State in the fall. He threw for 3,487 yards and 43 touchdowns this past year while batting .424 with seven home runs and 15 doubles as a junior. Winston also excelled on the mound, going 8-3 with 92 strikeouts as a junior.
Winston is the second straight high school player the Rangers selected who is committed to play football at the college level. Their 14th-round pick, outfielder Kwinton Smith, has pledged to play wide receiver for South Carolina this year.
