The Morning Nine from Surprise…The Feast of Saint Guntram

Another night game in Surprise on the Feast of St. Guntram

1. There are Rangers officials who think right-hander Greg Reynolds is deserving of making the team as a reliever. He is a guy who works both sides of the plate and throws strikes with good stuff. That would allow the club to move either Mark Lowe or Koji Uehara but so far other teams are insistent upon the Rangers picking up substantial portions of their salaries. Uehara is down for $4 million while Lowe is only at $1.7 million.

2. “Joe Nathan on doing his work in a Minor League game against the Royals on Wednesday, “You still have to come out and pitch. These guys are professional hitters. They are here for a reason. I had adrenaline going. I remember Brad Radke pitched in quite a few of these games and got beat up. You’ve got to come out and pitch.

3. A guy to watch in the farm system is 19-year-old outfielder Jordan Akins, who was their fourth round pick in the 2010 draft out of high school in Georgia. He has a football background but those who have watched him say he’s not only a tremendous athlete but more polished as a baseball player than they expected.

4. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was talking about Derek Jeter but Michael Young is another great example. Mattingly told Matt Kemp this spring, “The best teams work when the best player plays the hardest every day. It’s why the Yankees are what they are — because Derek Jeter always plays hard and establishes the team’s identity. You should be for the Dodgers what Jeter is to the Yankees.”

5. The White Sox have officially named left-hander John Danks as their Opening Day pitcher against the Rangers. Jake Peavy and Gavin Floyd are also scheduled to pitch for the White Sox in that series.

6. Kevin Millwood apparently has made the Mariners as their fifth starter. That likely means he’ll pitch against the Rangers in the second game of their series on April 10. His opponent would be Neftali Feliz.

7. Manager Ron Washington on Yu Darvish and Feliz: “They compete and they have the stuff to be successful. They’ll have their hiccups but we’ll help them fight through their hiccups. But we have no concerns about those guys.”

8. Right now it looks like Tommy Mendonca will play mostly third base at Triple A Oklahoma City while catching only occasionally.

9. Alexi Ogando pitches against Dodgers Minor Leaguers this afternoon. Derek Holland tonight vs. the Royals in Surprise Stadium.

If only Triple A were still OKC. Unfortunately we’re stuck with the lowly Astros. Thanks for trying, TR.
