The Morning Nine from Surprise…Anchors Aweigh

Here in Rangers camp we remember the USS Ranger. It was an aircraft carrier officially launched on this date in 1933. It was the first US naval ship built solely to be an aircraft carrier.

 1. Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre was asked on Friday about the World Series and said, “To be honest, it took me awhile and as soon as I thought I was over it, people saw me on the street and asked me about it.”

 2. Nelson Cruz on the same subject: “For me it’s over already. There was enough time to get over it. There is no doubt in my mind we can keep this going. We have the same guys, we have enough to get back to the World Series.

 3. The passing of former Rangers pitcher Terry Mathews reminds of the run of Louisiana pitchers that the organization had in the early 1990’s. Doug Gassaway was the scout who worked Louisiana back then and the Rangers also signed Gerald Alexander, Terry Burrows and Barry Manuel.

 4. Pitcher Joe Beimel was drafted by the Rangers out of high school in the 26th round of the 1996 draft but did not sign. Said Beimel, “It just wasn’t the right time. My girl friend at the time was pregnant. I just had my first kid and I wasn’t offered enough. I decided to go back to school.”

 5. Beimel did all right. He went to Alleghany College in Cumberland, Md. and then Duquense University. He was drafted in the18th round by the Pirates in 1998 and has now pitched in 567 games.

 6. Infielder Michael Young is due in camp on Saturday and Yu Darvish is among those who are scheduled to pitch batting practice.

7. Reliever Sean Green, who is in camp on a Minor League contract, has 10 wins in the big leagues over a six-year career. Three of those came against the Rangers while with the Mariners in 2006-08. Said manager Ron Washington, “He used to stick it to us. He would pound that sinker down low on us.”

8. Wonder whatever happened to infielder Khalil Greene? It was two years ago today that the Rangers voided his contract because he was still dealing with social anxiety disorder. He hasn’t been heard from yet.

9. Mathews was 4-0 with a 3.61 ERA for the Rangers in 1991. That’s tied with Darren Oliver for most victories without a loss over one season in club history.
