Hamilton on his contract; Washington on Cruz

Josh Hamilton addressed many subjects in his press conference on Friday morning. One was his contract…

“The Rangers have done a lot of me. I have a question. Have I done a lot for the Rangers? I think I have given them everything I’ve got. When it comes down to is, people have to understand this is a business. I love Texas, I love the fans, I love the organization and I love my teammates. But I’m not going to sit here and say I owe the Rangers. I don’t feel I owe the Rangers.”

Manager Ron Washington was asked what would happen in Nelson Cruz was able to stay on the field for 155 games.

“I think he could put up an MVP year,” Washington said. “He has that type of ability.”

I love Josh Hamilton, but I still don’t think he realizes how much the Rangers have stuck their neck out for him. I’m not sure any other team would provide him with the amount of support and insulation the Rangers have provided over the years. It is a business though. These guys like to remind of us of that daily. Just don’t tell me that the highest bidder is the best situation for you. Ask many players who have taken the biggest contract and regretted it.

I don’t think he owes the Rangers anything but those are the words of someone who is headed for free agency and the biggest contract offered.

BS Hamilton you owe a lot to the rangers, shut up an play!!!

Disturbing quote from Hamilton. Will be interested to see the actual interview to see if it is more revealing than just the written words.

Go Nellie!

Josh is using a negotiating tactic. The Rangers are also good negotiators. They will allow Josh to test Free Agency to see what he can get. If he gets a whopper of a deal, they’ll bid him adieu and wish him well. Then, they’ll use the money for someone else.

If he can’t find a better deal, the Rangers will re-sign him (happily) and will continue to be his family-away-from-family and take care of him as they have since he arrived. But, he’s not going to get a huge payday from the Rangers. He’ll have to earn his way a year at a time with them just as he stays sober a day at a time.

That’s the way it is when your live is running along the edge.

Eesh… Hamilton is right that he doesn’t “owe” anything to the Rangers because they paid him knowing what his struggles are. IMO, he has lived up to the contract they gave him. His two “relapses” weren’t huge deals… just one night wonders. I don’t think he is going to get the “Elite” contract he is necessarily hoping for from anybody unless he can stay healthy this year. If he puts out a 140-150 game season this year, I fully expect him to walk on a big payday… meaning that David Murphy becomes the starting Left Fielder and Leonys Martin is probably on his way to Arlington as the new 4th outfielder… assuming he hasn’t already assumed a CF platoon with Craig Gentry by then.
