Martin, Hamburger up; Cruz, O’Day to DL

The Rangers called up Leonys Martin and Mark Hamburger before Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

To clear room for both of them on the active roster, the team officially placed both Nelson Cruz and Darren O’Day on the 15-day disabled list. Cruz has a strained left hamstring and Darren O’Day has right shoulder inflammation.

Since Martin signed a Major League contract with the Rangers in May, he was already on the 40-man roster. To make room for Hamburger, who was not previously on the roster, the club placed Triple-A reliever Ryan Tucker on release waivers.

I’m unclear what this means to the playoff roster. If Cruz is on the Dl can he be brought back if and when we hit the playoffs. I was under the impression you didn’t put a player of his caliber on the DL for the reason they would be lost for the playoffs??? Any help?

Players on the active 25 man roster and the Major League DL on 8/31 are eligible for postseason play. Beltre and Blanco won’t be activated until rosters expand on 9/1 but are still eligible for postseason play, having been on the DL on 8/31.

Thanks Hefe
