Ryan says Ogando in the rotation only temporary
Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan told Todd Wills Tuesday that he expects Alexi Ogando’s season-opening role as a starter to be temporary.
“That’s what I would think unless he just excels so well that we think it makes sense to leave him in that position,” Ryan said. “With the needs of our bullpen, he’s going to need to be in our bullpen over the course of the year. His potential as a starter, he’s very capable of doing either. He’s a lot like (closer Neftali) Feliz in that way.”
Ogando will start Tuesday night’s game against Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Rangers are trying to stretch out Ogando to prepare to start, though Ryan said he doesn’t see manager Ron Washington using the right-hander deep into games like he would C.J. Wilson or Colby Lewis.
Ryan said he has confidence that Ogando can handle the transition to the rotation.
“He has that makeup with his fastball and his slider,” Ryan said. “He’ll be fine.
