Brandon Webb…nothing imminent

Now that the round the clock watch has switched from Cliff Lee to Brandon Webb…

Still a strong possibility he could end up the Rangers but as general manager Jon Daniels likes to say, “if there isn’t a handshake, then there isn’t a deal.”

* A source familiar with the situation said “nothing is imminent.”

* Webb really is interested in coming to Texas.

* The Rangers have a full 40-man roster so they may need to clear a roster spot before they can make Webb official.

* That would hold true for Vladimir Guerrero as well.

* Could be one sticking point is the Rangers want at least a club option for 2012.

Tune in tomorrow…

Again, T.R. I ask you, why do you have to write so many articles that say “Nothing has happened?” Why can’t you just wait to post about Webb until he has signed with someone?

Sometimes no news is the news that has to be reported.

Look, for 22 years, we have done the exact same thing every day. Try to collect as much information on the Rangers and present it in an interesting and informative manner.
It doesn’t get any more complicated than that. Sometimes we err, sometimes we stray, sometimes we do some different things.
Not trying to re-invent the wheel and not trying to win the Pulitzer prize. Just doing what seems to be the right time at the right moment, and then doing it all over again tomorrow.

Speaking for myself ( and the vast majority of readers i believe) keep ‘em coming t.r., rumours, opinions, wild surmises and all. It’s winter for pete’s sake (The Great Sports Desert) and without you we might have to pretend to be interested in (gag) basketball, football sans cowboys, or hockeypuck/brawlers. keep up the good work

I bet one of the coolest parts about having a successful blog is all the free, unsolicited advice from people who don’t have successfull blogs, detailing how your blog should be run.

In today’s world of “instant” information and speculation reported as fact – no news is news.

“Honesty is the best policy – but insanity is the best defense” – Arthur Detriech

I remember the one when Detective Harris was planning the TV show based on themselves and Barney was reading through the list of actors that Det. Harris was considering to play him, and he had listed Charles Nelson Reilly because he was mad at Barney . A great Show.

To 1253sir:
If, unlike the rest of us, you don’t care to hear the latest hot stove report according to Mr. Sullivan, then I cordially invite you to get out of the kitchen!

May I say “Ditto.” Don’t change a thing about your reporting or the blog. I’m curious about the hinted at deal out there,,,anything at this time of the year…just anything at all!

I saw Arthur Dietrich live, when I was in college, and he was hysterical. Not only that, the man could work a crowd like no comedian I have seen since. He will be missed and was sorely under-appreciated during his life.

Bingo, I heard it presumed that Nolan Ryan didn’t care for Josh’s style. I’ve read you ask this question before and was hesitant to respond because that rumor is, as far as I know, pure speculation. I guess it’s safe to say that someone with authority within the organization wanted to make a change to a more traditional style of broadcaster instead of Josh’s mildly irreverent pop culture referencing approach.

I liked Josh and thought he and Tom complimented each other very well. I’ve often fealt that his detractors hadn’t been exposed to much of a sampling of other MLB team’s play by play announcers or they’d have realized that Josh was one of the best in his field. Regardless of the reason why or who was behind the decision, Josh will be missed by many Ranger fans no matter who replaces him. Speaking of that, I haven’t heard a peep about who that might be or when an anoucement might be forthcoming. Dave Barnett, who subbed for Josh when he was working national broadcasts on Fox is supposed to return to the radio booth with Eric Nadel, I believe.

Again, I was hesitant to bring up the Nolan theory because, while it sounds believable, I can’t say with any cetrainty that he was behind the decision. I’m not sure whose call it was, but I think they made a mistake.

I know this isn’t germane to the topic……but can anyone answer either the chief reason or the primary thing that caused Josh Lewin to not be invited back, or fired, or let go…….?

I was curious and never heard anything definitive.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you T.R. and Ranger blog family!

Keep up the great work TR. Merry Christmas Ranger junkies!

Bingo, it seems plausible that (if Josh was let go and didn’t leave for personal reasons)someone in the organization wanted someone who was there for every game.

Barney Miller is the greatest cop show ever. Now that we have signed Webb, is it time to dump Young for a pitcher or young prospects and go get Beltre? Quick, it they dump Young and his salary, name the highest paid Ranger? We need a right handed hitting DH, Vlad please and another right handed power hitting first baseman, Not Cantu, thank you. I am ok with Lee leaving, but i sure hate to lose Smoak and Beavan for a sandwich pick. Sure Lee put us over the top, but was it really worth it in the long run? You never ever, never ever trade young pitching or players unless they are Boras clients who don’t want to be here.

Can Josh Daniels find another Colby Lewis? I love the Webb signing. What could we really get for Young? Are we going to have to eat 1/2 of the salary? When he is traded does he return to second base. Will he be really steamed because he suffered through the losing only to be dealt when we were close to winning a title? How bout Millwood? Is he too expensive? Burnett, Pavano, Blanton maybe? It was kind of curious to read that Beltre was being pursued because he #1 hits for more power, # 2 plays better defense. I personally would move Kinsler via a trade and put Young back to second base, if we are going to have to eat 1/2 his salary in a trade.

Look at these stats, 747 Innings pitched, 46-44 record 3.96 ERA over 4 years. Now these, 220.3 Innings pitched, 13-15 record forget the ERA which is NO WHERE Near the other guy. Any guesses? Hint, this guy is, “farther along than Jon Danks” Hint he was recently signed by the Oakland A’s. You guessed it Brandon Mc Carthy, a spare, pitcher who was never and will never be ahead of Danks. Would Jon Danks look good in our rotation right now? You don’t trade #1 left handed pitching prospects for a bag of beans. Jon and the Beanstalk. For those of you keeping track. Daniels has traded Adrian Gonzalez a left handed power hitting first baseman, Jon Danks a first round pick, left handed pitcher, Blake Beavan and SMOAK. The only deals he has been good at are ones that trade veteran players who don’t want to be here. He fleeced the Braves and kept his job. But i will never forgive him for Gonzalez and Danks. We have nothing for it. Beavan and Smoak, we only have Lowe, and a World Series loss. So please trade Michael Young for a pitcher or pitching prospects, dump that salary, like you have done for 32 + years.

If the above 4 postings don’t exhibit something of interest to a medical doctor I don’t know what will.

Nice signing of Brandon Webb…all we need now is Vlad and the pitchers and catchers can report…Let’s play ball.

“……..but i sure hate to lose Smoak and Beavan for a sandwich pick.” – You conveniently forgot the first rounder they’ll be getting as well. Shocking.

Hey Freddy, it isn’t like i did that on purpose. One time is enough. The bottom line is i said it when the trade was made. This deal only works for me if we #1 win the world series, #2 re-signed Lee. Our team is good, but we still don’t have a dominant staff ace. And until this “organization” learns to stop trading our #1 pitching prospects we will never have one. This “organization” is going to have to draft a pitcher, and homegrow him. And when he hits the bigtime or develops into a stud pitcher pay the price for it. Quick name one pitcher that we have developed and kept………………… Kenny Rogers is the closest one that comes to mind. Kevin Brown was the other but he couldn’t get out of here quick enough. We are going to have a 3 year window here, so enjoy it while you can. But we are going to need an ace pitcher to beat the Yankees and Boston. I hope Webb is healthy, but the odds are against it. This is just the Rangers doing what the Rangers do best, taking a less expensive route and hoping for the best, Sheets and Harden come to mind very quickly here as the left handed hurt pitcher we got from Detroit for Juan Gonzalez. I would like for us to try for Pavano still.

They got rid of Lewin because he is about 4 Ft 4 In and walks around like he is 6 Ft 6 In, Ha, ha. Little man syndrome, i believe it is called. I believe the Rangers got rid of him because, here we have a team going for the playoffs and he wanted to call San Diego Charger Football games. What has happened to Rojas on MLB. COM. Is he done there? Will he come back here? At least Lewin got the players names right. I remember Merle Harmon and Steve Busby. Boy Harmon was terrible and had lost it.

Josh drove me to Jack and coke many times those first two years, referencing some popular culture “idol,” “movie,” or 20-something TV show…..drove me absolutely bonkers! I did learn to enjoy his enthusiasm, and his pet name “TAG” for Tom Grieve…..and I do think he toned it down the past year or so.
I couldn’t figure out before some commented, WHY he would leave on his own–especially since the Rangers reached near the top of the mountain this year….but, I do believe Nolan, being the traditionalist, as I am, would opt for a more sedate, traditional figure. Many moons ago, the choice was Cury Gowdy (WHO I LOVED!) or I believe, Mel Proctor. BAD CHOICE. Curt Gowdy was unmatched in my estimation….anyway, I haven’t heard a peep on the new announcer, or any rumors, so, let’s hope for the best. Tom is laid back, and so was Dave Barnett–don’t need TWO laid-back souls announcing exciting Ranger baseball. Love Tom, but, Nolan, if you read this blog, bring in somebody who is a complete HOMER…like “The Hawk” in Chicago…..love someone who is FROM here, who is passionate about the area, and Ranger team. Happy New Year all Ranger fans.

?This deal only works for me if we #1 win the world series, #2 re-signed Lee.? ? Once again, Jon Daniels does not operate in your fantasy world of pre-determined outcomes. The Rangers traded 2 first round picks and in return won their first ever AL pennant, and get compensated with a #1 pick and a sandwich pick before the second round. That?s a gamble I?m willing to take again if it presents itself in July 2011, especially if the primary young pitcher in the trade doesn?t miss bats at the minor league level. Quick: Name one pitcher who has gone on to major league success but was unable to K less than 5 batters per 9 innings in the upper levels of the minor leagues.

?Quick name one pitcher that we have developed and kept? ? CJ Wilson has worked out pretty well. Actually, this staff is loaded with pitchers who developed in this organization, but it?s hard to see what?s happening in the present when you?re so fixated on wallowing in the misery of the past. Have fun with all that.

?We are going to have a 3 year window here? ? What happened to the 2 year window you said we had last offseason? Is the window going to expand to 4 years prior to 2012? Why only 3 years? Show your work, please.

Brad your thinking is so full of holes and so whacky but let me just show you for one reason why we can;t keep and develop all our young people. We currently have 40 people on our 40 man roster. We’re making 3 additions to that roster…Rhodes, Webb and hoopefully Vlad or someone Vlad like. So we have to drop 3 people. I don’t keep a list but I suspect it will be a close thing if we have 3 people who have options left and that we want down at Round Rock. We faced the very same problem in the Rule 5 draft just completed. You can’t keep this kids forever..it’s against the rules. So you turn them into currency. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don’t. Given Texeria you trade Gonzalez….given Moreland you trade Smoak and Davis?
Look I’d personally be happier if you found something else to harp on. Most of us are real happy with the Rangers and management right now. Why don’t you fill your glass up and notice it’s more than half full.

OK Brad, or D’God, or Nostra – whatever you want to call yourself this month. I’m calling you out on this one. Here is your quote from June 25: “Lee is a Yankee killer so lets go get him, but don’t overpay for him. In other words, no Perez, no Scheppers!”. Well, we didn’t give up Perez or Scheppers to get him, and he helped us win the first AL pennant in Rangers history. Beavan and Smoak were a small price to pay for the best Rangers season I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch. And I’m old enough to have seen them all, even going to Turnpike Stadium with my Dad to watch the Baltimore AA team – the D-FW Spurs, before we had a real MLB franchise.
