Minor League Notes From the Rangers

NORTHWEST LEAGUE HONORS: OF Jared Hoying, a 10th round selection in June, was named the Northwest League MVP, while manager Tim Hulett won his 2nd Manager of the Year award in the last 3 seasons on Wednesday…Hoying, a University of Toledo product, has hit .326 (75-230) with 12 doubles, 5 triples, 10 home runs, 50 RBI, and 19 stolen bases in 59 games with the Indians…Hulett is currently in his 4th season in the Texas system as manager for Spokane, guiding the Indians to a 162-137 overall record and a 2008 Northwest League championship.


FEATS OF STRENGTH: Strength and conditioning coaches Ric Mabie of Oklahoma City and Ed Yong of Spokane have each been voted  Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year for their respective leagues…the awards were based on a vote of their peers in the league…Mabie is currently in his 7th season in the Texas organization and 4th with the RedHawks…Yong is finishing his 2nd season in the Rangers organization as strength and conditioning coach in Spokane. 


CLUB PLAYOFF RECORD: Texas affiliates are within reach of a club-record 6 playoff appearances in 2010…the organization has sent 5 affiliates to the playoffs twice in both 2003 and 2008…the Arizona League Rangers and Dominican Summer League Rangers have both completed playoff runs, while Frisco and Spokane clinched playoff berths with first-half titles in their respective divisions…Hickory clinched a wild card spot in the SAL last night…Oklahoma City currently holds a 3.5-game advantage in the PCL American South.


FALL BALL: The Rangers have designated 8 players to continue their seasons in the Arizona Fall League…RHP Aldaberto Flores, RHP Danny Gutierrez, RHP Eric Hurley, LHP Tim Murphy, C Jose Felix, INF Davis Stoneburner, OF Engel Beltre, and OF Joey Butler will all play for the Surprise Rafters…Hickory pitching coach Brad Holman will serve in the same capacity for the Rafters…the Arizona Fall League opens play on Tuesday, October 12.


TOOL MEN: Several Texas prospects appeared in Baseball America’s “Best Tool Survey” based a poll of league managers in a recent edition of the publication…Oklahoma City LHP Michael Kirkman was chosen for the “best breaking pitch” in the Pacific Coast League, while Chris Davis (“Best Defensive First Baseman”) and Gregorio Petit (“Best Infield Arm”) also earned mention…Frisco manager Steve Buechele was named the “Best Manager Prospect” in the Texas League…Hickory SS Leury Garcia was named both “Best Defensive Shortstop” and “Best Baserunner”, while RHP Trevor Hurley was “Best Reliever”.


Oklahoma City RedHawks (AAA)           Pacific Coast League    Manager: Bobby Jones             72-65    1st Place          3.5 GA


PLAYOFF PICTURE: The RedHawks lead the American South by 3.5 games over Albuquerque and the club’s magic number currently stands at 3…the PCL playoffs begin September 8.


MISCELLANEOUS: INF Chris Davis has hit safely in 7 straight games and is batting .342 (13-38) with 5 doubles, a home run, and 7 RBI over his last 10 games…C Max Ramirez saw his 7-game hit streak snapped yesterday, but is still batting .313 (10-32) with a double and 6 RBI over his last 10 games…RHP Dustin Nippert (3.0 IP, 0 ER) and RHP Scott Feldman (4.0 IP, 2 ER) each made rehab appearances for the RedHawks on Wednesday.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: Frisco clinched a playoff berth with a first-half South division title…the RoughRiders will open the Texas League playoffs at home on September 8.


MISCELLANEOUS: OF Joey Butler hit safely in 16 straight games from August 9-27 and hit .308 (33-107) overall in August…RHP Clayton Hamilton has gone 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA (4 ER/18.2 IP) in 3 starts since joining the organization as a free agent on Aug. 18.

MISCELLANEOUS: OF Cody Podraza is batting .360 (9-25) with a double, home run, and 5 RBI over his last 10 games…RHP Danny Gutierrez has turned in a quality start in 3 of his last 4 outings, going 1-3, 3.91 (10 ER/23.0 IP) with 24 strikeouts during that stretch…RHP Trevor Hurley, a Tomball, TX native, was 2-1, 2.13 (3 ER/12.2 IP) with one save and 13 strikeouts over 9 August relief appearances…RHP Joe Wieland was 2-1 with a 1.73 (5 ER/26.0 IP) and 28 strikeouts in 5 games/4 starts during August.


Hickory Crawdads (A)   South Atlantic League Manager: Bill Richardson             32-32/72-62    3rd Place/2nd Half        6.0 GB


PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Crawdads defeated host Asheville, 10-3, on Wednesday night to secure the final playoff spot in the Northern Division…Hickory will host Lakewood in the opener of a best-of-3 game series on Sept. 8.


MISCELLANEOUS: SS Leury Garcia has hit .395 (15-38) with 7 stolen bases over his last 10 games…Garcia’s 46 stolen bases rank 4th in the SAL…LHP Robbie Erlin ranks among the SAL leaders in ERA (2nd, 2.18) and strikeouts (9th, 121)…RHP Neil Ramirez ranks among the SAL leaders in wins (T3rd, 10) and strikeouts (2nd, 139)…RHP Matt Thompson’s 129 strikeouts are 4th-most on the circuit.


Spokane Indians (R)     Northwest League        Manager: Tim Hulett             19-15/41-31           2nd Place/2nd half*      3.0 GB


PLAYOFF PICTURE: Spokane clinched a playoff spot with a first-half division title…the Indians open a best-of-3 series at Yakima on Monday.


MISCELLANEOUS: RHP Nick McBride has gone 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA (3 ER/17.0 IP) and 9 strikeouts over his last 3 starts…3B Mike Olt is batting .308 (12-39) with one home run and 4 RBI over his last 10 games…SS Jurickson Profar is hitting .313 (10-32) with one home run and 5 RBI over his last 8 games.


Arizona Rangers (R)     Arizona League            Manager: Jayce Tingler            31-24    1st Place          0.5 GA


SEASON WRAP: The AZL Rangers fell in the AZL semi-finals, 6-5, to the AZL Brewers on Monday night, ending the team’s season…led by first-year manager Jayce Tingler, the Rangers clinched the AZL West Division…Tingler has now guided his team to a division title in each of his first 3 seasons as a professional manager, after leading the DSL Rangers to division titles in 2008 and 2009…3B Christian Villanueva (.314, 2 HR, 35 RBI), SS Oduber Herrera (.337, 0 HR, 31 RBI), and OF Teodoro Martinez (.313, 1 HR, 22 RBI, 20 SB) were each named to the AZL Post-Season All-Star Team.


DSL Rangers    Dominican  League      Manager: Kenny Holmberg       42-23    1st Place          5.0 GA


SEASON WRAP: The DSL Rangers were eliminated from the playoffs on Aug. 24, losing 5-3 to the DSL Reds…first-year manager Kenny Holmberg led the Rangers to a 42-23 record and the team’s third straight title in the San Pedro de Macoris division…their season was highlighted by a 15-game winning streak from July 31-Aug. 13…INF Hanser Alberto won the DSL batting title, as the 17-year-old batted .358 (64-179) in 50 games with the Rangers.
