Nelson Cruz going on a rehab assignment

The Rangers got around to announcing Wednesday night that Nelson Cruz is going out on a medical rehabilitation assignment. Cruz will be assigned to Double A Frisco on Thursday. He has been sidelined since Aug. 16 with a strained left hamstring and will be activated on Monday in Kansas City. That is the first day he is eligible to be activated.

The Rangers also announced that pitcher Dustin Nippert will pitch for Triple A Oklahoma City on Friday. He has been out since July 20 after getting hit on the head by a live drive in Detroit.

Has anyone noticed the domino effect? Since Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz went on the DL, there has been a dropoff of production consequently from other players. While every player will go through slumps during the season, it is no coincidence that first Vlad Guerrero and then Josh Hamilton suffered at least mini-slumps. With Elvis Andrus emerging as a reliable leadoff hitter, the Rangers, when healthy, can follow with their own version of Murderers’ Row with Michael Young, Kinsler, Hamilton, Guerrero, and Cruz. Without Kinsler and Cruz there to provide protection, opposing pitchers found it much easier to pitch around the big bats of Josh and Vlad. The lack of production really showed on the last road trip. Luckily both are coming out of their slumps now that they are back home. Getting Ian and Nelson back is the key to keeping the consistency in the Rangers offense.
