Mathis recalled…Beltre sent down

The Rangers have promoted pitcher Doug Mathis to the big leagues and sent down pitcher Omar Beltre.

Mathis is 3-4 with a 5.09 ERA in nine starts for Oklahoma City and was 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA in nine games for the Rangers earlier this season. He will be used in the bullpen. The Rangers have not announced a starter for Saturday but Matt Harrison is a possibility. Beltre was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two starts for the Rangers.

Chris Davis isn’t doing anything new at Triple-A. He’s mashing inferior competition while stiking out too much and not walking enough. They sent him down to improve and he hasn’t done it.

Davis was striking out all the time were Smoak is at least hitting the ball and hitting it hard quite a bit. I agree leave him in a little longer but too much more.
What we really need is the new owner in place and get some new pitchers in here, our pitching with the exception of a few good ones is really hurting in the starting line up.

Send Smoak with him. Davis is on a tear–batting .350, plus great defense. Let’s go Jon, get it done, IT’S TIME!!

I HEARTILY AGREE SMOAK HAS HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO AJUST TO THE BALL CLUB AND HE HAS FAILED. THE MANAGEMENT TEAM SEEMS TO HAVE A DOUBLE STANDARD WHEN IT COMES TO DAVIS AND SMOAK. WHEN DAVIS WAS STRUGGLING LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR, THEY DIDNT HESITATE TO SEND HIM DOWN. WITH SMOAK, HE HAS STRUGGLED THE WHOLE TIME HE HAS BEEN HERE AND ALL MANAGEMENT CAN SAY IS GIVE HIM SOME TIME. YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT HE IS NOT READY AND MOVE ON. WAKE UP DANIELS AND WASHINGTON. QUIT BABYING HIM AND DO WHATS BEST FOR THE TEAM.

Smoak needs to go back and practice hitting and running in AAA, instead of practicing during the games at this critical time in the season. We need production from first base and it is time to bring back Chris Davis, who is tearing it up in OKC. He was voted into the minor league all-stars and should be in a Rangers uniform, since he is the better defense, and more experienced batter and obviously much faster on the bases. If JD is serious about giving the fans a championship, he will stop experimenting with the roster and get the experienced players back in the game.

hefe300, what do you think was the criteria used to judge Smoak before bringing him up from OKC? The pitching may not be the same but Davis is having a field day with them and his ML stats are still better than Smoaks.

HOW MANY MORE GAMES DOES FELDMAN HAVE TO THROW IN THE TANK BEFORE MANAGEMENT WAKES UP AND MAKES A CHANGE. HE WON 17 GAMES LAST YEAR, SO WHAT::: HE IS SO INCONSISTANT OUT THERE NOW, WHO CAN DEPEND ON HIM? YOU SAY THAT THESE PLAYERS ARE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR PERFORMANCE ON THE FIELD. IF THAT IS SO, THEN PROVE IT…

Davis? major league numbers are better than Smoak?s? I have .188/.264/.292 for Davis and .205/.313/.357 for Smaok. Smoak struggled to adjust but had an outstanding June (.823 ops) and his July is a little short, sample size wise for me to think he can?t turn it around. He?s hit a ton of line drives right at defenders, just like in the Angels series. Grieve said it best. 5 ropes in 3 games and nothing to show for it (paraphrasing, of course). Davis, on the other hand, is doing exactly what he?s always done in the minors, an approach that clearly caught up with him the last 2 seasons in the big leagues.

Look at the stats, Smoak and Davis are just about even (54-60) on strikeouts since the swap with similar number of ABs. Every offensive category Davis is heads above Smoak–its not close and his defense can be a game saver instead of a liability.

Just one minor problem with your line of reasoning there, centexfan. You’re comparing stats from Davis’ 3rd go around at Triple-A and Smoak’s first go around against major league pitching. That’s a total apples to oranges comparison.

Davis’ defense and being much faster on the bases is reason enough to make the change. Washington wants his Rangers to be known as a running team, but Smoak probably couldn’t outrun Molina in full catcher’s gear. “It’s Time” to make this team the best it can be with what we already have. Yes “It’s Time!”

The Rangers should have stayed with Davis. Now they are stuck with a tough choice…. stay with Smoak and his struggles or risk blowing out his confidence and psyche by shipping him out to Oklahoma City. Another player who got rushed into a situation he couldn’t handle.

Oh my! Davis is such fast base runner that it should factor into him getting recalled? You guys are seriously reaching now.

There’s no problem comparing Davis’ 3rd go-round and Smoak’s first. We want whoever’s the best right now. Doesn’t matter how many times they’ve been up.

Give Smoak a few more weeks. But not too much longer.
