Rangers sign Derek Holland
The Rangers have reached an agreement with Derek Holland on a one-year contract for this season. Holland agreed to a base salary of $414,430 plus a $10,000 bonus if he makes the All-Star team. Holland was 8-13 with a 6.12 ERA for the Rangers last season.

Wow. I didn’t even know that Holland was a free agent.
Derek Holland was not a free agent. The younger players whose salaries the team still control can sign a contract (which may include incentive/bonus clauses like the TR mentioned). If they choose not to sign, then the Rangers can simply renew the players contract at whatever the salary is dictated by the CBA for that players amount of service time. It’s usually better for the player to sign a contract – the salary could be higher then the CBA prescribed salary, and could include bonuses/incentive clauses. Players whose contract is renewed by the team generally don’t have any additional clauses/bonuses.
Sweet. Thanks for clearing that up.
