Millwood on Tuesday….
The Rangers are actively talking to other clubs about pitcher Kevin Millwood here at the Winter Meetings and the Orioles are quite serious in their interest.
That’s the word in the lobby here in freezing Indianapolis. But one Rangers source says the Rangers haven’t tried to move him.
Millwood, who was 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA in 31 starts for the Rangers this season, is scheduled to make $12 million in the final season of his five-year contract. It is possible that by moving Millwood, the Rangers could gain financial flexibility to obtain a right-handed bat. Jermaine Dye and Vladimir Guerrero are among those on the Rangers list.
The Rangers and the Orioles have had significant discussions involving Millwood here at the meetings but other teams are looking for starting pitching. The Mets, Cardinals and the Nationals could have interest as well.
Starting pitching is being highly-sought. At least 20 teams are looking for starting pitching and the Rangers have some depth. Clubs are even asking about Brandon McCarthy as well as the Rangers top young pitchers.
Without Millwood, 17-game winner Scott Feldman would be the Rangers No. 1 staff while they look to Derek Holland, Tommy Hunter, Matt Harrison and McCarthy to fill out the rest of the staff. The Rangers could also move Neftali Feliz and/or C.J. Wilson to the rotation if they can acquire bullpen help in the off-season.
