Rangers sign Ryan Freel to Minor deal

The Rangers have signed veteran utility player Ryan Freel to a Minor League contract and assigned him to Triple A Oklahoma City. He was released on Aug. 13 by Kansas City.

Freel played for three teams this season, including the Orioles and Cubs, and hit .193 with no home runs and five RBI in 41 games.

Freel has played in 594 Major League games over nine years, most of them with the Reds, and has a .268 batting average and 143 stolen bases. He has started at least 40 games at five positions, second, third and all three outfield spots.

He’s a dynomite little guy to have. Play anywhere. Can hit, run and steal. Xtra good utility team player.

Let’s see; Angels signed Kazmir… Rangers signed Freel. Huh?

This is an insurance policy type signing, probably to use when the rosters expand to get some guys a few innings off.

Angels traded for Kazmir, BTW.

The Rangers’ lack of financial flexibility right now probably precludes any knid of big move. I’m really not so sure one needs to be made anyway.

The only move I would make is to put Borbon in the leadoff spot for the rest of the season regardless of who is pitching. That lineup with Kinsler down further is just too dynamic.

He will provide some versatility in terms of being a pinch runner for guys like Jones and Blalock. A little more speed will never hurt and he is a veteran player who can give the guys in the outfield a little break.

The Angels are serious about winning the West and now have five veterans in their starting rotation. Freel might have been a good bargin but will not provide the punch it takes to win the West. Had he been that good, he sure would not have played for three other teams this season. Just another add-on here.

Another Jerry Hairston, who found more ways to lose games than anybody I can remember. With all the minor league talent the Rangers have what do they need a mediocre utility guy for? Carry water buckets? BAD DEAL mindless

Bad deal? How? What does it hurt exactly?

T.R.,
What is wrong with Josh Hamilton? I’m not talking about his average which has been OK since the all star break. I’m talking about his “power outage” which has lasted this whole year, really. Has the hernia he suffered been the problem, or is it a matter of him not making adjustments to the way opponents are pitching him this year? I find myself not getting excited anymore when he comes up to bat–and I don’t like that.
