Padilla could return next Tuesday
Vicente Padilla could be back in the rotation next Tuesday when the Rangers open up a three-game series against the Yankees in the Bronx.
That would be Derek Holland’s day to pitch.
Padilla is on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder but has been throwing without pain or stiffness on flat ground. On Tuesday he let it loose from 120 feet.
He is scheduled to throw off the mound in a bullpen session on Friday. If that goes well, the Rangers could put him back into the rotation on Tuesday in New York.
“We’ll know more after the bullpen but I don’t foresee any problems,” pitching coach Mike Maddux said.
The Rangers had initially talked about sending Padilla on a medical rehabilitation assignment in the Minor Leagues. But they seem to be backing off that position.
If the Rangers follow this plan, it would likely mean that Holland will make a start tomorrow against the Yankees and then go back to the bullpen.
