Young out of the lineup…so is Kinsler
Michael Young showed up at Minute Maid Park on crutches Saturday morning. He is still hoping to play Saturday but the Rangers decided against it. Hank Blalock is starting at third base.
“Mike is smart,” manager Ron Washington said. “He’s not going to put us in jeopardy. If he can’t go, he can’t go.”
Young had x-rays on Saturday morning on his injured right foot. He expects it’s only a sprain but was awaiting the results. Ian Kinsler also got the day off with Omar Vizquel starting at second base. He was in a 4-for-33 skid going into Saturday.
Kinsler will play Sunday. The Rangers are day-to-day with Young.
“It’s tough because this is a National League park,” Young said. “Hank and I can’t just flip-flop so I can DH for a day. Hopefully this is one of those things where it can’t get any worse. If it’s just pain, I can take it.”
The Rangers don’t expect Young to go on the disabled list. Remember Young played much of last season with small fractures in his ring fingers.
He injured the foot in the first inning on Friday trying to get back to first base on a pickoff attempt. He stepped on first baseman Lance Berkman’s foot and twisted the ankle.
“This is a good one,” Young said. “Lance has big feet.”
