Tennesse Waltz, Day 2….Gagne
Scott Boras is not going to give up Eric Gagne without a fight.
The Rangers are interested in Eric Gagne on a one-year deal. That’s hardly going to satisfy Boras, who works overtime trying to get maximum value for his clients.
Word at the Winter Meetings is Boras is calling every possible team trying to drum up interest and competition in Gagne. Really, only three teams could use a closer. The Rangers seem to be one despite what C.J. Wilson did at the end of last season. The Houston Astros and the Milwaukee Brewers both are looking for a closer.
The Brewers may sign David Riske for that job, but they still may look at Gagne. The Astros don’t seem to be that interested. Boras will keep trying and no doubt has massive amounts of data to back up his case.

If Boras can get a multi-year deal for him, I’d much rather have one of the other free agent set up guys. Hawkins, Mahay, etc…
I agree that Gagne should be a 1-yr contract player only.
Hey, i thought Wilson and or Benoit were the closers. What is the point of overpaying for Gagne? We don’t need him to close for us. We need a setup reliever, someone who is comfortable doing that. Gagne in Boston, was not comfortable as Papelbons table setter. I am sure Boston would like a do over on that one. Is this gonna cost us another 6 million?
If we where to sign Gagne (or LaTroy Hwakins, or anybody, even David Riske, for that matter) he should NOT be our closer. We already have two young, promising guys just waiting for their shot in the closers role – and furthermore, we’ve all but promised CJ and Benoit that they’ll have their shot in the closers role next year. To sign some washed up “veteran” like Hawkins or Gagne for one year, and hand them the closers job, that’s just wrong.
I’m fine with bringing Gagne back to be a late releiver – but not as a closer.
