Of Pine Bluff, Bologna sandwiches and the Hunter's Moon

Maybe Alex Rodriguez did it just to thank Tom Hicks.

Maybe Rodriguez and Scott Boras felt they owed Hicks for that $252 million contract from seven years ago and felt the Texas Boss deserved a $21 million tax break.

So he didn’t get a $300 million contract, at least not yet. But there will be Thanksgiving at the Rodriguez house, the Hicks manse and even out there in California where Boras still holds much clout as an agent despite recent developments and heaped ridicule.

There will be Thanksgiving in Atlanta with maybe some rain in the morning and that’s worth giving thanks for if you understand how bad the drought is out there. Water you lawn and put you in jail until you pay off a steep fine.Hunter

Global warming apparently although the north wind that came through Texas on Wednesday was anything but warm, a true autumnal chill that reminds us that the season is over and it’s a long time until pitchers and catchers report.

The Hunter’s Moon will be here on Saturday and the Rangers are hoping for their own Hunter’s moon that has nothing to do with fair Luna being full. But it appears that Torii Hunter will spend the weekend in Los Angeles and then there will lots of talk and apparently a decision before they all show up in Nashville on Dec. 2 for the winter meetings.

The Rangers compete against the Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox and Hicks said he’s optimistic although he added, "obviously it’s going to come down to money."

Must be nice spending Thanksgiving contemplating offers of $75-90 million. Beats Thanksgiving 1985, my last before marriage, sitting in an apartment down the street from Paschal High School, eating bologna sandwiches, drinking two bottles of wine and watching football on a 12-inch Sears black-and-white that is now 30 years old and still working.

Well, I think it can get Channel 8 but doubt Dale Hansen is any more palatable in grainy black-and-white than he is in living color.

But by all accounts Hunter is a special person, not only a talented outfielder and solid person but a strong clubhouse presence and leader. Four division titles in the past six years for the Minnesota Twins aren’t bad.Pinebluff

Plus he comes from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, or Pine Box as Hunter and his friends called it, a tough town in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Surviving Pine Bluff is not easy, not anymore today than 40 years ago when Robert Kennedy first went down the Sugar Road to bring to light the poverty of the Delta.

Hunter knew at least ten friends who were killed in gang shootings but now the Torii and Katrina Hunter Pine Bluff Community Fund raises thousands of dollars for their hometown. Hicks and Hunter have talked about bigger plans if they can reach an agreement on a new contract but that decision won’t come down until after the Hunter’s Moon has waxed and waned.

So it’s time to give thanks, eat turkey – or bologna – and feel the cold wind. The Rangers got one big present early in the off-season when their old shortstop helped out his old boss. Now they wait and see if Santa Claus will be good to them as well and bring them the center fielder they want so dearly.

If we sign TH, then are we gearing all our present development and future moves to converge in 2010– the ONE YEAR when our best pitchers might be developed enough, and our best hitters/fielders might not be too old, to put it all together?

That’s a pretty small launch window.

It seems smarter to build more uniformly toward a longer period of strength, say ’10 to ’16, when most of our players could hit their prime together.

Great article touting Hunter. My only question is did the Angels read that article? Hunter just signed with the Angels for 5 years at 18 million a year. Is Anaheim that close to Pine Bluff, Arkansas? If you are keeping track the Angels have obtained a pitcher, Jon Garland, a Center Fielder, Tori Hunter and are rumored to be wanting to deal Gary Matthews to the Orioles for SS Miguel Tejada. Sounds like a plan to me. If that takes place how does it happen? All three of those players are players that the Rangers at one time wanted. If the Angels can get Tejada for Matthews then what the he double hockey sticks do you think they could have gotten for Soriano? Nevertheless, who is the next target for CF? If the Angels are going to get Tejada for Matthews, i don’t believe we have any player that could equal Tejadas value, other than Mike Young and i wouldn’t do that. Mike might enjoy it though. Hey TR, Tori will be ok out there in Los Angeles. Rumor has it they have several gang bangers that he can attempt to have an impact on. Good Luck with that Tori. Congratulations. You got your money and your chance to win. Hicks and Daniels got used.

Hey TR, i graduated from Fort Worth Paschal High School in 1985. The Legion of Doom Era. Ha Ha. Now i am a Police Officer, Ha Ha. Happy Thanksgiviing. The Rangers are the Turkeys today. Ha Ha. Who is our Center Fielder? Would you do 4 years for 44 million for Matthews now? Throw in some HGH and some steroids and it may work. Ha Ha. And Matthews was so excited to be back in California. I guess it is really true and i don’t know who wrote it, but it goes something like this: You can never go home! Even i would take Texas over Baltimore.

So the way it stands now, the Halo’s have an outfield of Hunter, Vlad, Anderson & Mathews to back-up or trade for infield upgrades? Wow! Now that is the way to build a team. Adding a no 3 or 4 legitimate starter to boot in Garland, this team is going to be an animal for a few (5)years.

Lets see we have an outfield of, err, ummm? I guess really no set outfielders. Maybe we should resign Wilkerson to have a potential 20 homer guy? How pathetic

Hey kei, don’t hold back. Let loose, let us know what you think. Calm down, we have signed Vasquez a left handed utiltiy player for $800,000. We have become a laughingstock to the rest of the league. Hicks has no idea what he wants to do. He says he wants to win a championship, but fails to implement a plan. It seems to me he just wants to make just enough moves, to get the fans excited, keep them coming out there to pay $$$$$$ for seating, parking, souveniers and food and beverages. I still do not understand why anyone would buy a jersey of any of their players, because none of them stay out there long enough to warrant me paying 50 plus for a jersey. You can get a Texiera T-shirt for 4.99 @ Academy. I am going to create a jersey with removable velcro numbers and names and start selling those. Then i could buy a jersey and velcro the name and number on there and never be out of style. Now i am dating myself, but i still have a Pudge jersey and he gave that to me. The guy used to live right down the street from me here in Grapevine, Texas when he was single. Now that is a guy that lived amongst the people. He lived in a 2000 SF home amongst us and interacted. What a joke that he was allowed to leave. Now we all know why he was and is my favorite of all time. Sorry Sundberg.

Why are you guys moaning?

This means the Angels will be locked in to an over-priced aging team by the time the Rangers have developed a low-priced team that is coming of age!

Thank you Angels!

You’ll be good for now,

but bad by the time we’re good! (2010-2013)

You and Torii kept us from swerving from our only perceptible, only sensible plan.

Thank you!
