Elysian Fields remain a state of mind, a paradise of heroes, a place, as Virgil said, of perpetual springs and shady grove. A place where baseball is played and revered.
If Eric Wright doesn’t get lucky and make a touchdown-saving tackle on Drew Pearson in “The Catch” game, the legacies of two NFL franchises are changed and Bill Walsh is just another Hall of Fame coach.
(Yep, it’s me posting. I never miss “Postcards from Elysian Fields.”)
See you at the ballpark.
Every new year, and every new Super Bowl victory produced yet another “genius.” Bill Walsh was a good coach. May he rest in peace.
I think about other genius’s, who have emerged right after their one-year in winning a Super Bowl. I know Don Shula, Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi belong in the “genius” mode, especially Landry because he was the great innovator. Lombardi the great motivator. Shula the great tactician. To me, no one else quite approaches this group. There have been the Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnsons who have won the Super Bowl. Barry Switzer was the last Cowboy Coach to win the Super Bowl, and I never hear him congratulated for that. He’ll probably be the LAST Cowboy Coach to win that honor in my lifetime.
Yes, all the Tony Dungys and Mike Holmgrens of the world would like to enter that select group, but, even like Bill Walsh, they aren’t quite in the class of Landry, Shula and Lombardi.
Tom Landry.
Don’t be such a San Francisco homer.

God Bless The Walsh Family.
